City Council Authorizes Receipt of $28K Donation to Animal Shelter and More

A quick look at some more action from Lakewood City Council's meeting Monday night.

Monday night was a busy night for .

In addition to changes to the controversial pit bull ban and accepting Mayor Michael Summers’ endorsement of Cuyahoga County Executive Ed Fitzgerald’s anti-poaching agreement, the council also heard several other issues.

  • A on internet gaming cafés, sweepstakes gaming cafés and computer gaming cafés that was set to expire today was extended for another six months. Law Director Kevin Butler said the extension is required because “the body of law in this state is changing rapidly and is still in flux.”
  • The council authorized a $28,736.81 donation from the estate of Margaret Mihalek to the Lakewood Animal Shelter. Police Chief Timothy Malley said the check will be deposited into the kennel donation fund for improvements to the shelter. Mihalek’s estate also donated $10,000 to the shelter earlier this year, Malley said.
  • A to a ban on selling or consuming alcohol on city property was placed on second reading adn referred back to the rules and ordinances committee. The change in language would bring the ban up-to-date with current law allowing special permit-holders to buy and consume alcohol on city property, such as sidewalks.
