Get Out: Crafting for a Cause; a Caravan of Thieves; and Santa Paws

With all the great stuff going on this weekend around Lakewood, there’s no reason to be bored.

Here’s a few of Patch’s suggestions to kick away the boredom blues this weekend.

1.

Where/when: , 15621 Madison Ave.; Friday Nov. 18, 12-7 p.m.

Why go: You get to learn to knit and help someone less fortunate. Bring yarn & needles and stop in anytime Friday or Saturday from noon-7 pm. They will be crafting to keep those who are less fortunate warm this winter. Knitters, crocheters and those who want to learn are welcome! Simple & quick scarf and hat patterns are on the menu, all can be completed rather quickly, hopefully in two hours or less using bulky yarn(think Lion Brand Thick n Quick, etc., and big needles.) Have a favorite pattern? Bring it! A selection of yarn will be available to purchase for a nominal fee, and needles/looms will be provided for you to use. Let's put our craftiness to good use!

Where/when: , 12112 Madison Ave.; Saturday, Nov. 19, 9 p.m.

Why go: Vaudeville folk meets gypsy swing – why not go? For the past three years, this Caravan of Thieves has roamed the North American continent recruiting a family of avid thrill seekers at their high energy shows. Driving gypsy jazz rhythms, acoustic guitars, upright bass and violin lay the foundation for mesmerizing vocal harmonies and fantastic stories. Tickets are $12.

Where/When: , 15300 Detroit Ave.; Saturday, Nov. 19, 8:30 a.m.

Why go: Volunteer for a good cause. The will distribute 300 bags of food to families and seniors in need this holiday season, and are in need of volunteers. They will be bagging perishable foods in the back parking lot, and then delivering to Lakewood residents.

Where/When: , 15425 Detroit Ave.; Saturday, Nov. 19, 6 p.m.

Why go: Where else can you see a free movie? It’s World War II and Washington, D.C. is suffering from a severe housing shortage. Jean Arthur, a pretty working girl, advertises her apartment to share and Charles Coburn, an elderly millionaire with an eccentric streak, talks her into letting him move in. But when she's out, he pretends that he's the sole occupant and rents a room to handsome young Joel McCrea. It only gets wilder from there! With Five Star Films, Barbara Steffek-Hill travels the world (and scours our DVD section) to find the best movies you may have missed on your way to the multiplex. This film series is sponsored by the Friends of Lakewood Public Library.

Why go: Holiday card season is coming around the bend. Get your pup's photo taken with Santa Paws!  By request, we made two dates are available this year.
