Gypsy Beans Coffee Shop Closes at Beck Center

Gypsy Beans owner to keep the focus on the Gordon Square location.

Less than a year after opening at Beck Center for the Arts, the Gypsy Beans coffee shop is closing its doors.

Gypsy Beans Baking Co., a staple of the Gordon Square Arts District, will serve its last cup of coffee in Lakewood on July 31.

The coffee replaced the Beck Café at the location in November 2012.

“Recent unexpected family obligations and demands of the Gordon Square location have not allowed (owner Niki Gillota) to operate within the parameters to run both businesses effectively,” according to a press release issued Tuesday afternoon.

Gillota opened Gypsy Beans in 2005, at the corner of W. 65th Street and Detroit Avenue. The “traditionally styled European coffee house” specializes in soups, salads and pastries.

“The decision to withdraw from the Beck Center location was a difficult one,” added Gillota in prepared statement. “The café at Beck Center is a wonderful space and was a great opportunity. I needed to be completely hands-on with each location but the circumstances do not allow it.”

The coffee shop will reopen Aug. 1, under new management as “Beck’s.” The coffee shop is expected to feature art exhibits and live music, beginning with guitarist and songwriter Jim Kozel on the Red Stage from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
