On the article What Should Go Here? Former GetGo Gas Station

ReplyConsidering when it was a gas station, and every time I drove by at least 7 out of 8 pumps were occupied, and considering that the new Get-Go has 16 pumps and every time I drive by it seems that 14 out of 16 pumps are occupied I'd wager that a gas station at that location would do rather well.

On the article Parking Restrictions Eyed for Automated Recycling Proposal

Pat, I'm smelling something fishy as well. The payback calculation is definitely "off." The trucks will need to be replaced in several years, as will the bins. Potentially this puts us in a worse financial spot than we are now.

@Original Bill. Because numbers matter. Where is the other money coming from. Is the city laying off two refuse workers to make up the other $100K+? What is the life expectancy of the new bins. If the bins only last 10 years (seems probably long as when I lived in another state it seemed we got new bins every 5 years) then this proposal never breaks even as we'd need to spend another $1Million on new bins in a decade.
Don't get me wrong. I'm in support of the bins. The "blue bag" system is pretty annoying. I just don't like made up "payback" calculations. As someone who works in a business that lives and dies by accurate investment payback calculations I get very skeptical. After all, its $1.5 million of our tax dollars at stake here. We have a tax levy on the books to raise $3.5 million for schools. If this recycling plan never makes back the investment it's pretty foolish.

Reply7 year payback? Lets see. $1.5 million divided by a denominator of $100,000 additional revenue per year. That shows me a payback of 15 years. Where is Shawn Juris getting the 7 year number.

ReplyWhile this obviously needs to be investigated, I caution people overreacting. I've literally gone to a shooting range, gotten home, and found a .22LR bullet stuck in the tread of my shoes, only to find them several days later. They are very small. Literally they are .22"x1.0"
While this should be investigated, to make sure there isn't something else going on, this incident by itself isn't very frightening.

ReplyThis is why the United States needs to adopt laws like other nations where the Plantiff in a civil suit pays the attorney fees of the defendant if they happen to lose their suit. I firmly hope Lakewood fights this tooth and nail and this guy gets zilch. However that may cost the taxpayers, the citizens of Lakewood, more in the long run than throwing this guys some cash.

Phil, I personally don't choose to Open Carry, at least not in the suburbs, although I fully support those that choose to do so. I don't prefer it for a few reasons. Now, when I'm in a different community with different standards, (i.e. visiting rural colorado) I have carried openly with no issue. Its easily more comfortable and the community is used to it and you don't get a second look.
I would take issue with your message that a guns says, "I'm ready to kill someone." I would contend that it's more along the lines of, "I'm able to defend myself and others if necessary." There's a difference. From what I've read in this thread and your other posts I take it you were or are in law enforcement. Have you ever seen a criminal use a proper holster? I have many friends that are police and I have asked every single one of them if they have ever encountered a criminal using a holster and not one of them has been able to answer in the affirmative. This is of course a slight difference that the average suburban soccer mom has never considered or thought of. The well dressed man with a custom 1911 in a $100 leather holster is not likely to be a criminal.
We could discuss this topic at length. Ultimately, I think it's naive to think that a 4"x6" window sticker on the front door of an establishment that says, "No guns" provided any measure of safety.

I'm pretty excited about the Toomey Bill. I as a Concealed Weapons Holder won't need to worry about background checks any more. Plus Right to Carry reciprocity? Fantastic! Almost glad that the Obama Camp wants to pass a bill so bad they don't care what's in it. The bill essentially restates current law with no changes plus gives some goodies to law abiding gun owners like me.
Will it make any difference? No. Will it reduce inner city crime? No. Will it prevent the next School Shooting? Absolutely not. But it will make folks "feel good" because we "did something." And that's why we send our legislators to Washington. We need them to help people feel better.
