Justin Staples was picked up as an undrafted free agent over the weekend.
Justin Staples used to play under the lights in Lakewood, only miles away from Cleveland Browns stadium. Now the St. Edward grad might suit up for the orange and brown. Staples, 23, was one of many players signed by the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent over the weekend, according to The Plain Dealer. He played three seasons at the University of Illinois as a defensive end. Last season he had 16 tackles, one sack and two pass breakups. In his senior season as St. Edward, Staples had 92 tackles, seven sacks, one interception, 11 pass break-ups, six forced fumbles and two recovered fumbles. He was in the Top 20 of recruits from Ohio by Rivals.com.

In typical fashion, the St. Edward High School wrestling team dominated at the state tournament in Columbus over the weekend. The Eagles won their 28th state title. St. Ed's finished with 117 points — 12 points over second-place finisher, Massillon Perry High School. Dean Heil (132) won his fourth individual state championship and was awarded the Division I "Most Outstanding Wrestler" honor, according to Cleveland.com. Domenic Abounader, also a senior, took first place as well, winning his third individual title in the 182-pound weight class, reported Cleveland.com. St. Edward defeats Amherst High School, 9-2, on Saturday.
Correction: The Eagles will square off in the district semi-finals. The St. Edward High School hockey team has done it again. This time, the Eagles beat Amherst High School, 9-2, to qualify for the district semi-final, reported cleveland.com. According to the report, the Eagles (21-13-2), took an early lead and never looked back at the John M. Coyne Recreation Center in Brooklyn. St. Edward will square off Wednesday against either Brecksville-Broadview Heights or Holy Name.

Longtime assistant Jim Duffy takes over.
The head coach of the St. Edward High School soccer team has resigned his post. Tony Dore, who’s led the “perennial winner” soccer program for the past 13 years, is stepping down to dedicate more of his time to his apparel business, according to a news release from St. Edward. Longtime assistant coach Jim Duffy, who teaches religious studies at the Catholic school, is expected to take the helm of the program. The Eagles host a special ceremony in the school's Kahl Student Center to mark National Signing Day.
St. Edward High School, known as a powerhouse in the field and in the gym, hosted a special ceremony to mark the future careers of 16 of those student athletes. On National Signing Day — the annual occasion when students across the country officially announce their colleges of choice — it was a special day at St. Eds’ Kahl Student Center. James Kubacki, the president of St. Edward High School, said he’s proud of the student-athletes.
