Turns out that the email sent to a Lakewood Observer board member threatening the newspaper’s publisher was traced to a “spoof” website in Czech Republic.
A police department investigation has determined that a city councilman’s email identity was taken and used to threaten the publisher of the Lakewood Observer. Last month, Ward 3 councilman Shawn Juris filed a police report noting that his business email account had been somehow compromised after an email was sent to Stephen Davis, a board member of the Lakewood Observer. The email called for Jim O’Bryan, the newspaper’s publisher, to be removed from his position, with the sender threatening to use the “full force and power of my position to make this clear.” According to the police report, obtained through a public records request, the email was sent from a server in Czech Republic known as a “spoofing” site. The website allows people to …

Shawn Juris told police that someone “manipulated” his business email account to send a threatening note to the Lakewood Observer.
City councilman Shawn Juris has filed a police report alleging that someone used his business email account to threaten the publisher of the Lakewood Observer. The email, allegedly sent to a Lakewood Observer board member, calls for the publisher to be removed from his position, adding that he would use the “full force and power of my position to make this clear.” The board member posted the email on the Observation Deck — the Observer’s online forum. A flurry of comments followed. However, Juris claims that he didn’t send the email, noting that his account had been “manipulated.” He filed the police report later in the day. As of Thursday afternoon, the report was not available. “The police are investigating,” Juris, who represents Ward …

Although there were a few uncontested races in Lakewood on Nov. 8, that didn’t stop some candidates from raising some cash in 2011.
Although there were a few uncontested races in Lakewood on Nov. 8, that didn’t stop some candidates from raising some cash in 2011. Three city council candidates ran unopposed. Candidates’ campaign finance reports — set to be finalized and posted online once audited — were due last Friday and released to Lakewood Patch on Wednesday. Officials from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections said the post-election campaign finance reports cover the time period between Oct. 19 and Dec. 9. The pre-election reports — tracking campaign finances before Oct. 19 — were due Oct. 27, according to the board of elections. Candidates aren’t required to file a pre-election report if they do not spend or raise more than $1,000, said election officials. …

City Council could pass the ordinance at its Nov. 7 meeting.
Lakewood City Council's Public Safety Committee voted Monday to move legislation regulating the three known wood-fired boilers in the city out of committee at city hall. In addition to banning any new boilers in the city, the updated legislation would: “The intent throughout this has been to ensure that there is some advisory wording within this (legislation),” Ward III Councilman Shawn Juris said. “I hope that, as you’re looking to burn, you would be considering these same things.” Law Director Kevin Butler said the city would base no-burn days on the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinated Agency’s Air Quality Index, but he doesn’t expect to use it. “In the past 10 years, there has rarely been a day that falls into the burn season that has …

Candidates for city council took turns answering questions on housing from audience members at Tuesday's debate.
The 2010 US Census found the number of vacant houses in Lakewood nearly doubled since 2000. That certainly caught the eye of city council members. Candidates for Lakewood City Council in the Nov. 8 election met for a public debate Tuesday at the Woman’s Club Pavilion in Lakewood Park. The event was hosted by the League of Women Voters Cuyahoga Area. Council At-Large Ryan Nowlin said he plans to work with Mayor Michael Summers’ administration to inform homeowners of the programs and assistance available to help them take care of their homes. “We live in a neighborhood full of beautiful century homes that need a lot of tender loving care,” Nowlin said. Nowlin is being challenged by John Zappala, a small business owner. In response to an …

The increasingly popular wing-eating shuffle will feature deep-fried chicken from 11 of Lakewood's bars and restaurants, and is expected to bring in a sell-out crowd of 1,000 people.
Six hours, $15, 44 wings, 11 bars, 1,000 people and one overall winner pretty much sums up the plan for this year's Wing Crawl. This Saturday's event, organized by the Pillars of Lakewood young professionals club, will shuttle partiers around to enjoy 4 wings at each of the 11 locations that span from Around the Corner to Deagan's Kitchen and Bar. "Most of those folks do tend to come in out of the Lakewood area, so it's a good opportunity to show off the city, and shine a spotlight on our restaurants and businesses," Ward 3 City Councilman and co-organizer Shawn Juris said. After attendees sample all the buffalo flavored fare, they'll cast ballots to help determine the deep-fried winner. Celebrity judges from local news and radio stations …
