Schools Treasurer Search Down to Three

School board selects finalists Thursday to replace Rick Berdine at the treasurer's post.

And then there were three. The Lakewood Board of Education narrowed its search for the district's new treasurer down to three candidates. Seeking to replace its current treasurer, the board whittled its candidate field from six to three finalists: Teresa Emmerling, treasurer, Massillon City Schools; Lewis Galante, treasurer, Perry Local Schools; and Timothy Penton, treasurer, Whitehall City Schools.  "I think all the candidates we interviewed were excellent," said board president Matt Markling. "Narrowing the choices down was a difficult decision. We feel good about having three excellent treasurers to interview." The board started out with 20 applicants for the post. The six finalists were interviewed on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the …

The board will start interviewing the candidates on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

Clarification: Board President Matt Markling said the full list of applicants will be submitted to Lakewood Patch by Monday evening. Lakewood City Schools announced the six candidates it will be interviewing for the position of treasurer Tuesday, Dec. 6, according to a press release from the district. The candidates are: Board President Matt Markling said during the Nov. 21 Board of Education meeting he hopes to have a contract signed with the new treasurer by the end of this month — his last official day on the board. The new treasurer will start on Aug. 1, 2012, and current treasurer Rick Berdine’s last day is Dec. 31, 2012. “We’re not going to interview in public – they’ll be private interviews,” Markling said at the meeting. “If we don…

School Board Honing in on a New Treasurer

The board is expected to whittle down the field of 21 applicants at Monday's meeting.

The Lakewood Board of Education is expected to whittle down the field of applicants for treasurer at its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday. “All together, there were, I think, 21 applicants,” said Christine Gordillo, communications specialist at Lakewood City Schools. Lakewood Patch filed a public records request with the district asking for the names and resumes of the 21 applicants, but was denied access and told the information lies in the hands of the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA), who is in charge of gathering the applications on behalf of the board. Superintendent Jeff Patterson said on Friday the board didn't receive the list from OSBA - a private group not covered under open records laws - until Thursday evening. …

Seven File for Three Seats on Lakewood School Board

School board vice president John Kamkutis has dropped out of the election, but president Matt Markling has yet to submit his withdrawal letter.

With three open seats and potentially seven candidates running, this could certainly be an interesting election for the Lakewood Board of Education.  According to the Cuyahoga County’s Board of Elections final list, Kamkutis is not seeking re-election, but Markling still may run against the five new candidates as he has still not submitted his withdrawal letter, a Board of Election official said. In July, Markling made the unexpected announcement that he would not run for reelection, and he did not immediately return e-mails asking if he still planned to run. He has until early September to issue the withdrawal letter.   School board member Linda Beebe, whose seventh consecutive term expires on Dec. 31, will be vying for number eight this …

Challenges Ahead for New Lakewood Schools Superintendent

During Monday night's Board of Education meeting, Jeff Patterson addressed the public for the first time as superintendent and laid out four primary goals for the district this year.

One chapter ends, another begins.  With Joe Madak’s tenure officially ending this past Sunday, Monday's Board of Education meeting revolved around Superintendent Jeff Patterson and his list of primary goals that he’ll set out to implement in the upcoming 2011-12 school year.  The most important one, according to Patterson, is to improve student achievement. Later this month, he and his staff will receive the value-added report which indicates on average how much the district’s 6,000 students had progressed during the 2010-11 school year.  Along those lines, there will also be a heavy focus on 21st century skills: a widely accepted project-based curriculum that leverages the tools of the digital age (handheld devices, tablets, netbooks, …

School Board President Matt Markling Not Seeking Re-Election in November

After four years on the Lakewood Board of Education, Markling's obligations are shifting from politics to parenting.

Lakewood Board of Education president Matt Markling has announced that he will not seek reelection this November.  After launching a campaign in late May, Markling decided to call it off and step down effective Dec. 31, 2011.  He said his exit from politics coincides with his need to spend more time with his wife and children.  When asked whether or not he would reenter the local political sphere, he said, “I will never say, ‘never.’ But, for now, I am solely focused upon my need to put family ahead of politics." “Matt sat down with us and made an easy and not-so-easy decision given his dedication to the district,” school board vice president John Kamkutis said. “But family comes first and Matt is a wonderful dad whose number one priority …

Lakewood Indoor Basketball Program a Nonstarter

Only two people have signed up following last week's launch of the program and school board president Matt Markling, among others, aired their frustrations regarding the dismal start during Monday's regular Board of Education meeting.

After being given the green light from the Board of Education last month, the Lakewood Rec’s pilot indoor basketball program has received far less interest than originally anticipated.  Lakewood Recreation commissioner Erin Fach had hoped that anywhere from 80 to 200 adults and students would join the program, but one week after its launch, only two people have signed up.  And since the program only runs through August 11, residents and board president Matt Markling aired frustrations and wanted answers at Monday’s regular school board meeting at Grant Elementary.  “I, outside of one communication I received, have not seen publicized anywhere, I mean, any information about the open gym,” Lakewood recreation coach Stephanie Toole said. “I …

School Board OKs New Student-Athlete Policy

In response to claims from students and parents that coaches have deterred and even threatened to cut or bench athletes who want to play more than one sport.

In response to speculation that Lakewood High School coaches have been actively deterring students from playing more than one sport, the district's Board of Education has instituted a policy which sets limits on a coach's influence over his or her athletes.  Speculation has grown during the school year as students and parents have claimed that athletes who want to play more than one sport in a given season or school year were discouraged and threatened to be either benched or cut by coaches.  The reasoning behind this suspected conduct is that Lakewood's sports programs have become increasingly competitive and demanding as students will now practice and train for a major sport throughout an entire year, and if too many students started …

This is a great start. With more coaches requiring 12 month commitment from student athletes it is leading to early specialization and repetitive motion injuries as well as less participation in sports in general. Coaches should be restricted to their season only, this should include the Strength and conditioning programs now becoming the fad at many high schools. These should never take the …   more ›

Lakewood School Board Elects New Officers

Markling selected to serve as president; Kamkutis picked for vice president.

The Lakewood School Board had its first board meeting of the year Monday night, and the first order of business was to elect its new officers. At a special reorganization meeting — that took place immediately before the board's regular meeting — the new officers were sworn in. Matthew Markling was elected by the board to serve as its president. John Kamkutis was selected as the board's vice president. At its next meeting later this month, the five board members will choose who will head the various committees. Betsy Shaughnessy, who stepped down from her post as board president, reflected on 2010 — a year marked with a "focus on academics and finances." "This has been an eventful year," she said, adding that the highlight was the district'…
