Cleveland Beansprouts' alfalfa sprouts cleared after contamination check.
Nature’s Bin has begun restocking a local Cleveland company’s alfalfa sprouts after its crop was deemed clean from a contaminant by the Ohio Department of Agriculture earlier this week. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced last Friday that the ODA had found listeria in a limited supply of Cleveland Beansprouts, Inc.’s sprouts during testing. The FDA announced a recall of Cleveland Beansprouts sprouts, but further ODA tests proved negative, according to Erica Pitchford, a public information officer of the ODA. Nature’s Bin assistant produce manager Kate Link said the store pulled the sprouts from its shelves immediately after the alert was released. Pet Supplies Plus hosts a grand “reopening” event over the weekend.
A couple of stores at the City Center Plaza just got quite a bit larger. When Jo-Ann Fabrics closed its doors last year, Pet Supplies Plus and Marc’s took the opportunity to grow. During the summer, an extensive expansion and renovation project began on both stores. And, this weekend, the Pet Supplies Plus store featured its new store in a grand “reopening” event. The store more than doubled its size from 4,500 square feet to more than 10,000 square feet. “We’re ecstatic to reopen our doors to all of our 2-legged and 4-legged neighbors, and show them everything we have to offer,” said store manager Jason Scanlon. Trainstopping Police received a report just before 3 a.m. Dec. 23 of two cars driving east on the railroad tracks near Brockley Avenue. Norfolk Southern Corporation, who owns the railway, was advised to stop all trains in the area. Police arrived to find the cars were driving about 10 feet from the tracks, and were not in danger of being hit. Norfolk Southern was advised, and told to call if any further assistance was required. Double whammy Marc’s experienced two separate incidents of shoplifting on Dec. 23. Marc's, Drug Mart and CVS all begin expansion projects in Lakewood.
If you're looking to open a pharmacy, it looks like Lakewood is the place to be. Three of them within a couple blocks of each other are expanding or building new spaces downtown. Marc’s got the ball rolling with an expansion this summer. Then, there’s the new construction of a new CVS Pharmacy on the property of the former St. Paul Lutheran Church. And last week, Drug Mart unveiled plans for a $2.5 million renovation in Lakewood Plaza.

Pet Supplies "Plus" and Marc's are both expanding into space formerly occupied by Jo-Ann Fabrics.
Construction work is under way at the space formerly occupied by Jo-Ann Fabrics in City Center Plaza. After the fabrics store closed its doors in April, neighboring Pet Supplies "Plus" and Marc's began plans to expand those store into the space, city officials have said. Workers have been buzzing at the site. Most recently the drywall went up. City officials said work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Drinking, driving and fleeing An alleged drunk driver was arrested and charged with driving a vehicle under the influence, fleeing police and driving a vehicle without an operator’s license March 19. Police tried to get the driver to pull over just before 2 a.m. near the intersection of Bonnieview and Lake avenues. Police said the man was traveling on Bonnieview at 6o mph. The chase was called off after a few minutes, but the man stopped the car near Larchmont Avenue. Police caught up with the man at 2:16 a.m. in the 1600 block of Winton Avenue. Disturbance Lakewood police received a call around 2 a.m. March 18 about a woman being beat up by several men near Madison and Wyandotte avenues. When police arrived minutes later, the men were …
