City, Schools Looking to Work Together

From the recreation department to school safety, the school board and city council are looking at several ways to cooperate.

Lakewood City Schools and Lakewood City Hall are looking to cooperate a little more. From support of the upcoming school levy to sharing some of the responsibility with the recreation department, officials are looking to see how they can share services and facilities. For the first time in three years, the school board and city council officially got together for a joint meeting at Garfield Middle School on Monday. Following several presentations made by each side, city and school officials discussed ways they could work together. One of the topics covered was the school-district-run recreation department. City council president Brian Powers pointed out that Lakewood is one of a handful of recreation departments in the state run by the …

Ohio Ethics Commission to Review Nepotism Allegation Against School Board Member

Daughter of board member Ed Favre hired as recreation department athletic coordinator in 2004.

Correction: This version corrects the spelling of Leslie Krogman. The Ohio Ethics Commission is looking into an allegation of nepotism against school board member Ed Favre in connection with the board's 2004 hire of his daughter for the recreation department. Favre, who claims — with the board's backing — that he did nothing wrong, abstained from the vote to hire his daughter Leslie Krogman as athletic coordinator. Lakewood is one of a handful of school districts in Ohio that oversees the recreation department that serves city residents; the school board votes on spending, hires and other business. Schools Superintendent Jeff Patterson told Lakewood Patch the state ethics commission contacted him Monday. He said the district will cooperate…

Few people in the Lakewood Rec Department are as hardworking, knowledgeable, personable or community-minded as Leslie Krogman. As a parent who is frequently in the Board of Ed Building signing up a child for one activity or another, I often start the process by seeking out Ms. Krogman for direction. Not only is her experience with Lakewood’s recreational programming unparalleled so is her natural…   more ›

School Board Taps New Director To Head Up Two Departments

Avon schools superintendent will run the district’s recreation and human resources departments.

The school board has found a new recreation director — one that also will run the school district's human resources department. The board voted Monday to hire Jim Reitenbach, who has been the Avon schools superintendent since 1999. Reitenbach resigned from Avon schools in December. Reitenbach will lead the district’s shaken-up recreation department, as well as its human resources department. The recreation director's post opened after the board did not renew long-time Director Erin Fach's contract's earlier this year. The human resources job is open because Director Deb Cahoon is retiring this year. Reitenbach will begin his new post on Aug. 1 at a salary of $113,000.  Reitenbach has been superintendent in Avon since 1999. He retired in …

I am in complete agreement with you on this. Actually not much that the school board has done lately passes the smell test. If I am not mistaken, all of the top people for the school system will be double dippers. Funny that when the possibility of Mr Berdine double dipping came up it was a huge problem but suddenly that problem has disappeared. The other question, for me is, has the HR Director'…   more ›

Changes Made at Recreation Department

Fach's contract not renewed; Callahan resigns

Lakewood City School officials confirmed two high-ranking members of Lakewood’s recreation department have either resigned or didn’t have a contract renewed in the last few weeks. The Lakewood School Board elected not to renew the contract of Recreation Commissioner Erin Fach at a recent board meeting. His contract is scheduled to end July 31, and he has not been replaced, according to Lakewood Assistant Superintendent Kevin Bright. Bright also confirmed the resignation of Athletic manager Michael Callahan. Callahan vacated his post on April 13th and a replacement has not been chosen, according to Christine Gordillo, communications and public relations specialist for Lakewood City Schools. Bright said he could not comment further on …

No Shortage of Activities, Programs in Lakewood This Fall

The Lakewood Recreation Department recently released its new fall booklet, and there's plenty of activities and athletics to choose from for youth and adults alike.

Boredom is now in short supply as the Lakewood Recreation Department just released its new book of activities and athletics for children and adults.  There are dozens and dozens of activities and programs to choose from. Want to kick like a karate master? Tae kwon do is the perfect fit (ages 7-adult). Dream about being the next astronaut? Join the NASA Academy of Future Space Explorers (grades K-5).  Perhaps artistic expression is a better fit. Not a problem, there are "ac's" for that too. Hit the dance floor and take up beginner or advanced ballet, jazz dance or tap dancing classes (ages 5 and up).  For athletics, young children can join “Start Smart” sports and learn the fundamentals of football, baseball, basketball, golf and soccer.  …

Lakewood Board of Education Supports District's Neediest Students

School board member Betsy Shaughnessy reached out to the public last night to help drive donations to a fundraiser that will put school supplies in the hands of needy students.

During last night's Board of Education meeting, Betsy Shaughnessy did her part in promoting the Lakewood Family Collaborative's Lakewood School Supplies Fundraiser.  The fundraiser is set up for Lakewood's neediest middle and high school students who lack the means to purchase several school supplies.  “If anyone would like to make a contribution, paper, notebooks, pens, pencils, calculators (TI-30X) that kids need at high school for math. I think it’s an excellent opportunity for us to reach out and make a little bit of a difference.” Folks from the community can also donate loose leaf paper, pocket folders, binders, locker organizers, combination locks, pencil cases or a check donation made out to the Lakewood City Schools.  The goods …

Lakewood Indoor Basketball Program a Nonstarter

Only two people have signed up following last week's launch of the program and school board president Matt Markling, among others, aired their frustrations regarding the dismal start during Monday's regular Board of Education meeting.

After being given the green light from the Board of Education last month, the Lakewood Rec’s pilot indoor basketball program has received far less interest than originally anticipated.  Lakewood Recreation commissioner Erin Fach had hoped that anywhere from 80 to 200 adults and students would join the program, but one week after its launch, only two people have signed up.  And since the program only runs through August 11, residents and board president Matt Markling aired frustrations and wanted answers at Monday’s regular school board meeting at Grant Elementary.  “I, outside of one communication I received, have not seen publicized anywhere, I mean, any information about the open gym,” Lakewood recreation coach Stephanie Toole said. “I …
