Lakewood Students Remember Civil War

Lakewood A.P. History students celebrated the 5th Annual Lakewood High School Celebration of History.

Students in Dr. Chuck Greanoff's freshmen AP U.S. History classes celebrated the impact and meaning to our country of the Civil War in the 5th annual Lakewood High School Celebration of History, held March 26 at the Lakewood Park Woman’s Pavilion. Tri-fold presentations created by the students were on display depicting important battles, people and other aspects from the Civil War era. One interesting interactive display offered foods to sample from the era including Johnnycake, a cornmeal pancake and Hard Tack, a hard biscuit. The audience full of parents of the more than 60 students enjoyed a formal program that included musical selections of the era (Dixie Land, Battle Hymn of the Republic, The Bonnie Blue Flag) composed and performed …

Lakewood High Student Wins Poetic Gold, Heads to Carnegie Hall

Sophomore Grace Roberson beat out 50,000 students to win the gold medal for poetry in the prestigious Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition

How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Just ask Lakewood High School sophomore Grace Roberson.  The underclasswoman will head to the prestigious concert hall later this spring to accept a gold medal for poetry that she won in the national Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition, according to LHS Communications Specialist Christine Gordillo.  Roberson won the top honor after judges chose her poetic works over the 185,000-plus poems submitted by 7-12 grade students from across the nation.  Entries were judged on originality, technical skill and emergence of personal vision or voice. The national winners were selected from the 1,500 students who advanced from their regional competitions in January, said Gordillo.  “I was very surprised. I …

Lakewood High School Athletics to Join the Southwestern Conference

But don’t forget about the Rocky River rivalry just yet. The move won’t happen until the 2015-16 school year.

That didn’t take long. After only a couple years in the competitive West Shore Conference, the athletic programs at Lakewood High School are switching gears and joining the Southwestern Conference. Beginning in the 2015-16 school year, the Rangers will join Midview High School as the newest members of the conference, bringing the total to 10. “For scheduling purposes, it’s easier for us — particularly in football,” said Kevin Bright, the assistant superintendent at the Lakewood City Schools. Another plus, he said, is that all of the teams are Division 1 or Division 2. In the West Shore, there are a couple Division 3 teams, making state rankings more difficult for the Division 1 squads. “This equalizes the competition for us,” Bright said…

John Liber, a junior, is the second diver in two years to qualify for the state tournament.

A Lakewood High School junior finished 14th in the state diving tournament over the weekend. John Liber was the second diver in two years to qualify for the state tournament.  He recently finished in seventh-place at the recent Division 1 District competition, according to a post on the Lakewood City Schools’ website. Liber wasn’t alone at the diving portion of the district tournament. Jim McMahan finished in 10th place, and Soule Dimacchia finished 19th.
