Taste of Lakewood: New Site, More Vendors

Event moves to Screw Factory after years at Clifton Club.

The ninth annual Taste of Lakewood will be bringing back to the neighborhood the irresistible combination of art and food for another round of good eats and visual treats on June 3. But this time around, the Taste of Lakewood will be in a new location. The event will be held at the Lake Erie Building, Templar Industrial Park, also known as the Screw Factory, after being held at the Clifton Club for its first eight years. “It’s a larger venue. Instead of limiting ourselves to 22 restaurants, we’re going to have 28. We will be able to sell more tickets. We’re partnering with the Screw Factory artists as well, and they’ll have their studios open,” Val Mechenbier, of the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce, said. The Taste of Lakewood runs from 4 to …

Lakewood’s Girls Rugby Team Finishes Second in the Nation

Squad loses championship match to defending national champion.

The Lakewood High School girls rugby team is the second best team in the nation. By a score of 54-10, the squad lost the national championship match at Stanford University on Sunday. The girls fell to defending national champion — and girls rugby powerhouse — Fallbrook High School (CA). “The girls have absolutely no reason to hang their heads,” said Lakewood High School principal Bill Wagner, whose daughter, Jessica is one of the team’s leaders. “The Fallbrook team played flawlessly.” Earlier in the week, the Lady Rangers beat Kent High School (WA) and upset Divine Savior High School (WI) to earn a spot in Sunday’s championship game. “Being able to be on the sideline as both the principal and a father of a team member was priceless," …

But they should also expect some rules. As expected, no drinking, no tobacco use permitted. Here’s the scoop, thanks to the prom committee:  Rules for Prom:       No ID = No Entrance; Failure To Purchase Before April 20 = No Entrance Formal Dance Dress Code:   Rules for those attending after-prom:       No ID = No Entrance; Failure To Purchase Before April 20 = No Entrance

Lakewood High School Prom Set, But Volunteers Still Needed

Prom slated to take place at the Great Lakes Science Center on May 12.

Prom is expected to be a night to remember for the seniors at Lakewood High School. But organizers could still use a hand getting the event ready. This year’s prom — slated to take place at the Great Lakes Science Center from 7 to 11 p.m. May 12 — still needs some food donations. The after-prom — from 11:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. — needs parents of seniors to volunteer.   Those looking to volunteer are encouraged to email Vicki Smigelski or call her at 216-789-5020.

Death of Lakewood High School senior still under investigation.

Cleveland police have no suspects and are still investigating the early morning April 15 shooting death of Lakewood High School senior Sherwon Wanzo, said Cleveland police Det. Jennifer Ciaccia. Students Get Their Hands Dirty in Lakewood

The Lowe’s Heroes crew pitched in to help students install stepping stones around the plant boxes for the school’s new Outdoor Learning Lab on Tuesday.

A Lowe’s truck rolled up Lakewood High School on Tuesday morning. And employees from the national chain got their hands dirty alongside the students. Last year, the school’s horticulture teacher, Mark Rathge applied for — and won — a $5,000 grant that provided supplies. So on Tuesday, the Lowe’s Heroes crew pitched in to help students from the constructions trades program at West Shore Career-Tech to install stepping stones around the plant boxes for the school’s new Outdoor Learning Lab. An official dedication is set for May after the students put the plants into the ground.  The lab, located at the high school’s visitor’s entrance, will be made up of four raised planting boxes, housing perennial flowers, shrubs and vegetables, said …

Letter to the Editor: Find Sherwon Wanzo’s Killer

The former teacher of Lakewood High School senior, who was murdered on Sunday, speaks out his former pupil.

Editor's Note: This letter to the editor was submitted by Felix Catheline, Sherwon Wanzo's former coach and teacher at Columbus South High School. My name is Felix Catheline and I am the head wrestling coach and 12th grade government teacher at Columbus South High School. Sherwon spent his Junior year living in Columbus, and it was my privilege to coach him in wrestling. Sherwon had never taken a very active role in high school athletics before he came to us at South, which made his athletic career all the more impressive. In his only season, he won a league championship at 152lbs., and showed great promise for the future. I was heartbroken when Sherwon had to return to Cleveland for his senior year. I kept in touch with him during the …
