The regional champs were recognized at a recent board of education meeting after an undefeated season.
After going undefeated in the regular season, the Lakewood High School Academic Challenge team is headed to compete against schools from across the country. The team was honored at the school board meeting last Monday. High school teachers Bob Sedlak and Peter Petto took over the team this past fall. “We may be working all summer long,” Sedlak told the school board. “This is a great group of kids.” The team went undefeated, and is scheduled to compete in the National Invitational Tournament in Washington, DC at the end of the month. The squad’s strengths include math, science (chemistry and biology), history, government, astronomy and music. “The students love the competition,” Sedlak added. “If Mr. Petto and I would practice every day …

Lakewood finished 13-4 in the West Shore Conference this season.
The Lakewood High School boys' tennis team finished off one of its best seasons by beating Rocky River 3-2 and claiming the West Shore Conference title. What makes it even sweeter is that it's the team's first year in the league. Seniors Chris Brinich and Dan Mezin won in straight sets at second and third singles, respectively. The second doubles team of senior Matt Carlson and junior Colin Levis dominated in their straight set win. The Rangers were undefeated in the WSC and completed their regular season at 13-4. They have now won three of their past four league titles.

Josh Reagan will continue his basketball career for the Red Storm.
The University of Rio Grande men’s basketball team announced the signing of Lakewood High School grad Josh Reagan for the 2013-14 season. Reagan, a 6-foot-6, 235-pound power forward, averaged 25 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game at Cuyahoga Community College this year. He ranked third nationally in scoring and sixth in rebounding among all NJCAA Division II teams. Reagan is the son of Bill and Gina Reagan of Lakewood. He spent one season at Delaware Technical Community College, where he averaged 19.1 points and 12.2 rebounds for a team that reached the NJCAA national tournament. “I didn’t get into the basketball thing early like everybody else. Lakewood High School is one of 50 schools from across the country named finalists in Vans Custom Culture art competition that includes a grand prize of $50,000 for the winning high school’s art department. The contest was created by Vans to inspire high school students across the United States to embrace their creativity and draw attention to the importance of art as an integral part of our schools’ focus in the face of shrinking budgets. The contest started off with 1,500 schools and is now down to the top 50 from five different regions. LHS is one of 10 schools selected in the Northeast Region, which includes 16 states. A local student won $2,500 in scholarships.
A Lakewood High School student has been announced as National Merit Scholarship winners. Sheila McMahon was one of 2,500 winners chosen from a pool of 15,000 across the nation. She plans to study linguistics in college. National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.

Lakewood is the 120th best high school in Ohio and 2,204th nationally, according to the annual rankings prepared by U.S. News & World Report. Lakewood recieved the silver medal and was praised for its participation rate (20 percent) in Advanced Placement courses. Students are also 92 percent proficient in reading and 86 percent proficient in math, according to the magazine. Learn how U.S. News calculated the Best High Schools rankings.

Three students were given Kindle Fires for not missing school.
Three lucky, and devoted, Lakewood High School students got a big prize for perfect attendance in the third quarter. Freshman Adam Giffels, sophomore Katherine Renaudin and junior Lee Mechenbier each won a Kindle Fire in the attendance incentive giveaway. The tech giveaways are part of the high school's attendance incentive program, sponsored by Best Buy, that raffles off a prize at the end of each quarter for those students with perfect attendance. After each quarter, Best Buy provides LHS with $1,000 to go toward the incentive program and the giveaway prize. Past prizes have included a big-screen TV and a laptop as well as earlier version iPads.
The students' work won a combined $600 in scholarship money.
Two Lakewood High School students were recognized at the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center at Fairview Hospital's fifth-annual high school art contest this month. Artists from five local schools participated in the event, which strives to educate the students and their peers about risk factors that can lead to the development of cancer. This year’s theme was Anti-Tobacco, and students were charged with learning about lung cancer and tobacco use, and then translating what they learned into a work of art that would educate the general public about the hazards of smoking.
