Dog Park Mauling: Could It Happen In Lakewood?

Lakewood's Dog Park has very clear rules that, if followed, are aimed at preventing an incident like what happened in a South Euclid dog park.

A fatal dog mauling in South Euclid's dog park has dog owners across the region debating safety at dog parks.  The Plain Dealer reported Monday that a woman who brought a Siberian Husky to a dog park will face a misdemeanor charge after the Husky attacked and killed a Chihuahua at the park.  Lakewood Dog Park has these rules and others designed to keep order: According to The Plain Dealer's account, the owner of the Chihuahua did not see the attack and the person who brought the Husky could not control it. What do you think? Are rules enough? Could it have happened here? Do you feel your dogs are safe at dog parks?

@Dan. They can't. But that doesnt stop the owners from planting their a**es on a bench, with no control over their dogs. But if you would have said, how can a large dog defend itself against a pack of Chihuahua's, the answer would still be the same. Don't kid yourself, it can happen there... and probably will. Kinda goes back to the OWNERS, not the DOGS.   more ›

Lakewood Dogs Make a Big Splash at Pool Plunge

Seventh-annual event is big draw — despite its tendency for bad weather.

Dozens of dogs braved high winds and cloudy skies to end summer on the right foot — or paw — with the seventh annual Pool Plunge at the Foster Pool at Lakewood Park on Tuesday afternoon.  Proceeds from the event — sponsored by the Friends of the Lakewood Dog Park — will benefit the maintenance and improvements to the Lakewood Dog Park. The event made quite a splash with the dogs — as well as their owners. The event was expected to raise nearly $1,200, said event organizers.

Schnauzers Abandoned at Lakewood Dog Park Find a (Temporary) Home

Lakewood resident takes in two dogs after a man drops them off at the Lakewood Dog Park; Cleveland APL looking for a permanent home.

Two dogs that were abandoned last Friday at the Lakewood Dog Park have been rescued. Lakewood resident Brian Mooney arrived at the park just after a man driving a pickup truck showed up around 7:30 p.m. and dropped off two Schnauzers. And then drove away. Mooney said he took the dogs under his care until he could find a permanent home for them. He said he couldn’t keep the animals because he already has two — and four “is just too much.”  News of the dogs went viral on the Web, via a vast e-mail network of animal adoption advocates. Mooney said he was “inundated” with inquiries about the dogs — which he said are brothers.  He decided to take the dogs to the Cleveland chapter of the Animal Protective League, because as it turns out, the man…

Snapshot of the Day: Gone to the Dogs

The Lakewood Dog Park is one of the few places on the west side where pups have free reign to dig, play and mix it up with other canines.

Located off Valley Parkway in the metroparks, the Lakewood Dog Park is the ideal location for pet owners to bring their furry best friends.

Judge Rules in Favor of Lakewood Dog Park

Barking doesn't break Rocky River ordinances, ruling says.

Turns out that a lawsuit filed in 2007 against Lakewood by Rocky River — its residents upset by the noise at Lakewood Dog Park — had more bark than it did bite. On Tuesday, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Carolyn Friedland ruled in favor of Lakewood. Friedland found that the dog park, opened in 2003, is not a nuisance and denied Rocky River's request for an injunction to close the park.  Lakewood Mayor Michael Summers called the legal case “a fairly torturous process,” and said he’s glad it’s over.  “The judge did a good job of summarizing the facts in her ruling,” he said. The lawsuit stemmed from complaints from four nearby residents about noise from  dogs at the park barking. About 10 neighbors of the park — located at 1299 Metropark…
