Burger King Eyes Major Facelift

The fast-food restaurant at Madison Avenue and W. 117th Street eyes major overhaul to the property.

The floor plan will largely remain the same at the Burger King on Madison Avenue and W. 117th Street. But that’s about it.  Officials from the burger chain are planning a major renovation at the property at 11900 Madison Avenue — inside and out. The owner of the restaurant, Cleveland-based Franchise Operations, recently submitted plans to Lakewood City Hall. The city’s architectural board of review will hear the company's proposal at its Jan. 10 meeting.  Plans include changes to the entrances, interior walls and drive-thru windows. According to the proposal, the shingled roof would be replaced a metal, seamed roof. New paint, signs and graphics are also planned. On the inside of the building, the proposal calls for an update to the …

Dunkin' Donuts Outdoor Patio OK’d, Set to Open

Fast-food chain slated to open on W. 117th Street.

Dunkin' Donuts, expected to open its doors on W. 117th Street next week, will also have an outdoor patio. Last week, the city's planning commission unanimously granted the fast-food chain a conditional use permit for an outdoor patio that will feature three tables and 12 seats. Construction of the city's second Dunkin' Donuts location recently wrapped up. The design plans got final approval from city’s architectural board of review meeting earlier this year. The national doughnut chain plans to open up at 1528 W. 117thStreet, near the intersection of Franklin Boulevard, next week.  The property sits just north of the Shell gas station, where two homes were recently demolished.  The new quick-service restaurant would employee at least six …

Calanni Auto Service Denied Request to Add Parking Spaces

In his application to the city, he said that a restriction would “effectively put (him) out of business.”

A Lakewood businessman was denied a request to add a few more parking spaces to his Madison Avenue auto repair shop. That ruling by the city’s architectural board of review, came after a court battle earlier this year between the city and Charles Calanni over the number of cars he’s allowed to have parked in front of the business. Calanni, who owns Calanni Auto Service, at 13728 Madison Ave., applied for a redesign of his parking lot with the city’s architectural board of review. His request was denied. City inspectors have reported that there are often more than a dozen vehicles parked in front of the business — despite only allowing eight. Calanni was found guilty of failure to comply in Lakewood Municipal Court in April 2011 for having …

St. Edward Looks to Raze Home to Make Way for Community Garden

City’s architectural board tables the issue, hoping to get some additional details.

Officials from St. Edward High School are hoping to tear down a house that the school owns at 1350 Nicholson Avenue to make way for a community garden.  But the proposal was met with some opposition at the city's architectural board of review meeting on Thursday. Don Murphy, the school’s business manager, presented plans to the board. “A garden would allow students to continue to work on service projects and the garden would provide fresh vegetables to our community meal program,” he said. “We are looking for ways to expand on the education opportunities for students and this is a way to do this.”  Nearly 400 students participate in the gardening program, he added.  The school would demolish the house, add fencing and landscaping and …

Oh My God!!! Not a garden... with smelly manure ..... and with 400 students traipsing around... why not just put a McDonald's, a new drug store or a gas station there!?! I would much rather have a run down crack house stay. Why do things have to change? Lets complain more about this and every thing else people are trying to do to make Lakewood a better place!   more ›

GetGo Gas Station Gets Approved

Lakewood Architectural Board of Review gives the green light to 16-pump gas station — despite dozens of neighboring residents who oppose the project.

It looks new GetGo gas station is coming to the southwest corner of Detroit Avenue and Bunts Road. But not everyone is happy about it. Dozens of residents attended the city’s architectural board meeting Thursday evening, as the board OK’d Giant Eagle’s plan to build a new GetGo gas station at the property it once owned.  But the proposal that was first introduced to the board early last month, looks a bit different than the plan that was OK’d on Thursday. Some of the neighbors took issue with the possibility of an environmental impact — and their property values — while others were concerned with noise, fumes and loitering. “We don’t think this was a good idea, pardon the pun, from the get-go,” said Dennis Pehotsky, who lives one home to …

Poll: Who Wants the GetGo Gas Station on Detroit Avenue?

Lakewood residents seem a bit divided on the issue. We thought we’d take one of our unscientific polls to get the scoop.

Judging from some of the comments on the last couple posts on the subject, itseems that Lakewood residents are divided on the issue of the new proposed GetGo gas station on the corner of Bunts Road and Detroit Avenue. At the city’s board of architectural review meeting on Thursday, most of the dozens of residents in attendance opposed the gas station. We thought we’d get your opinion. So, what do you think?

Worst idea, I live on Giel Ave and had such high hopes for quality development that will improve the already thriving economic development activities in downtown Lakewood, this plan brings the corner no closer to downtown Lakewood, makes the area less walkable and more congested. AWFUL (screamed in frustration).   more ›

Habitat For Humanity to Build Its Second Home in Lakewood

City’s architectural board of review gives the green light for the construction of a home at 1549 Lakewood Avenue.

The plans for a Habitat for Humanity home at 1549 Lakewood Avenue were unveiled — and approved — at the city’s architectural review meeting Thursday. This is the second Habitat home designed for Lakewood this year. This one, sitting at the corner of Lakewood Avenue and Franklin Boulevard, will be built at the site of a former apartment complex deemed a “nuisance” by the city and demolished in August. The home — on land originally considered for a new pocket park — already has a family looking to move in, said Habitat officials. But the city had a couple of issues to sort out first. “I appreciate the wraparound porch, but it’s not something we see a lot of in Lakewood,” noted the board chairman Michael Molinski, however the porch is staying…

Dunkin' Donuts Unveils Plans for New Location

Project — on W. 117th Street — gets the final approval from the city's architectural board of review.

It looks like a second Dunkin' Donuts location is coming to Lakewood. The plans to build the doughnut shop on W. 117thStreet got final approval from city’s architectural board of review meeting on Thursday. The national doughnut chain plans to open up at 1528 W. 117thStreet, near the intersection of Franklin Boulevard. The property sits just north of the Shell gas station, where two homes were recently demolished. While a purchase agreement is in the works, the property is owned by Berea-based Self Service Mini Storage. The new quick-service restaurant would employee at least six people, according to the plans. The proposal shows a 2,200-square-foot brick building — with a 25-foot front yard setback — that would feature a dine-in area as …

Revised Plans Approved for New Family Dollar

With new designs, architectural board of review OKs the project.

The city’s Architectural Board of Review approved the plans for a new Family Dollar at former site of the Ganley Auto Dealership at the intersection of Grace and Detroit avenues on Thursday night.  Construction of the 9,000-sqaure-foot, single-story chain discount store is expected to begin sometime this winter. Tara Pesta, from mbi/k2m Architecture — the firm representing Family Dollar — was on hand to field questions from the board. The last time Family Dollar’s developer went before the board, the plans were sent back to the drawing board. Criticisms included that the designs needed to feature windows; no split-faced blocks; a variety of bricks; and the façade should have more depth. Pesta said the company was listening. The new designs…

Heideloff Estate’s Owners Eye Big Changes

Plans — that include two additions and a five-car garage — presented to the city's architectural board of review.

Earlier this year, an elegant estate on Edgewater Drive was spared the wrecking ball as well as a proposed plan to build 14 single-story senior living homes on the property. The property, commonly known as the Heideloff Estate, is once again giving neighbors a headache. The new owners have proposed a huge home makeover on the 2.6 acre property at 13474 Edgewater Dr. The blueprints — revealing several additions to the four-bedroom, 4.5-bath home — were presented last week to the city architectural board of review. Mark Reinhold, the architect for the project, told the ABR that among the changes, the homeowners would like to include two additional wings on the home and a five-car garage. The proposed wing facing west would include a small …

I am continually impressed with ignorance that neighbors exude in situations such as this. Not long ago the property was slated for 14 senior homes that would have a monumental impact on the density of the area. So one single family proposes a beautiful remodel which will not only increase the neighborhood appeal but will also increase the surrounding property values. Instead of praising the new …   more ›
