Lights Out at Two Dads’ Diner

Popular diner serves its last meal after eviction notice OK’d.

Two Dads’ Diner is now closed. The popular Detroit Avenue diner served its last meal over the weekend. A sign still hangs on the wall behind the counter: Thanks, Two Dads’ Diner. The details about the diner’s abrupt exit aren’t quite clear, but according to court records, the building’s owner Tammy Asimakis filed an eviction notice in Lakewood Municipal Court on Feb.12 — citing $12,000 in back rent.  According to court records, it’s the third time since 2009 that eviction notices were filed against the diner. On March 1, the Lakewood Municipal Court, giving the diner 14 days to vacate, granted the eviction. On Wednesday, witnesses reported police officers clearing equipment from the diner, at 14412 Detroit Avenue. Two Dads’ co-owner John …

Colin - you might as well being talking to a rock (regaring that real name thing!) :) It (not using real/ful name) is the main reason I rarely participate ... other than tossing a "proverbial hand grenade" into the mix. It really irks me that folks don't have enough conviction to identify themselves!   more ›

Letter to the Editor: School Board Member John Kamkutis

Kamkutis says his decision to not run for re-election was based on his desire to spend more time with his family.

Editor's note: After deciding not to run for re-election to the Lakewood School Board, board member John Kamkutis shared this letter to area media outlets — including Lakewood Patch — to explain why. I have received an overwhelming response to not filing for reelection. When I first was appointed to the school board, I was in sales and had a very flexible schedule. Since then, I ventured into the restaurant business, if you know anything at all about the business it consumes all of your time. My time now is not as flexible. Secondly, with the little time I have, my wife has been solely responsible for taking care of the girls. They are at the age of being involved in extracurricular activities for the district. Cindy's responsibilities …

Seven File for Three Seats on Lakewood School Board

School board vice president John Kamkutis has dropped out of the election, but president Matt Markling has yet to submit his withdrawal letter.

With three open seats and potentially seven candidates running, this could certainly be an interesting election for the Lakewood Board of Education.  According to the Cuyahoga County’s Board of Elections final list, Kamkutis is not seeking re-election, but Markling still may run against the five new candidates as he has still not submitted his withdrawal letter, a Board of Election official said. In July, Markling made the unexpected announcement that he would not run for reelection, and he did not immediately return e-mails asking if he still planned to run. He has until early September to issue the withdrawal letter.   School board member Linda Beebe, whose seventh consecutive term expires on Dec. 31, will be vying for number eight this …

Big Victory for Basketball in Lakewood

School board opens gyms of city's schools for the sport; more than 100 people attend city council meeting to support hoops.

Nothin’ but net. After weeks of discussion, planning and development, Lakewood Recreation Department commissioner Erin Fach received unanimous approval from the Board of Education at Monday’s regular meeting to move forward with a pilot indoor basketball program. Despite some early apprehensions from board members — such as security concerns and injury liability — the board OK'd the program relatively quickly. Although it hasn't begun yet, the schools' program hasn’t undergone the same sort of scrutiny and contention, when compared with the outdoor pilot basketball program at Kaufmann Park. All games will take place on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday evenings. They will be supervised, students and adults will play within preset age groups (…

Lakewood School Board Elects New Officers

Markling selected to serve as president; Kamkutis picked for vice president.

The Lakewood School Board had its first board meeting of the year Monday night, and the first order of business was to elect its new officers. At a special reorganization meeting — that took place immediately before the board's regular meeting — the new officers were sworn in. Matthew Markling was elected by the board to serve as its president. John Kamkutis was selected as the board's vice president. At its next meeting later this month, the five board members will choose who will head the various committees. Betsy Shaughnessy, who stepped down from her post as board president, reflected on 2010 — a year marked with a "focus on academics and finances." "This has been an eventful year," she said, adding that the highlight was the district'…
