Giant Eagle Ends Foodperks, Adds Incentive to Fuelperks

The last day to earn foodperks! is Feb. 13.

Giant Eagle is ending foodperks! and adding extra incentive to use its fuelperks! program, according a press release from the Pennsylvannia-based company. The last day to earn foodperks! will be Feb. 13 and discounts must be redeemed by May 31. According to a letter obtained by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the CEO said customers thought the foodperks! program was "a little too complex." In an effort to inform in advance the customers who were receiving the highest level of savings with foodperks!, Giant Eagle began to issue letters to those customers along with added value offers in appreciation of their loyalty.  These letters began to arrive late last week, and will continue to be delivered to customer mailboxes through this week.  In …

GetGo is for Lovers

New gas station at the corner of Bunts Road and Detroit Avenue on Valentine's Day.

The GetGo gas station at Bunts Road and Detroit Avenue is expected to open on Valentine's Day. The plans for the gas station at the busy intersection call for a 5,600-square-foot brick building, with eight fueling stations (16 pumps). The GetGo station — unlike the Pennsylvania-based company’s typical gas station — will offer a few grocery items, prepared foods, a patio and a Wi-Fi café. The site will also feature bio-retention landscaping, helping to alleviate the city’s storm water management issues, a move lauded by city officials. The project didn’t come without criticism from neighbors. Giant Eagle sold its property across the street at 14013 Detroit Avenue to Urban Active in 2007. However, plans at the site to build a workout …

Opening one month behind schedule? I thought GetGo was slated to open January 15th. Guess the cold weather didn't help. Awaiting with anticipation so I don't have to wait at the increasingly jammed packed GetGo across the street or on 117th Street.   more ›

GetGo Getting Done on Schedule

The plans for the property at the busy intersection call for a 5,600-square-foot brick building, with 16 pumps.

Don’t look now, but the construction of the new GetGo gas station on Detroit Avenue and Bunts Road is almost finished. LOOK: Buildings to Make Way for New Development on Detroit Avenue

Former grocery store torn down to make way for a new GetGo gas station; site of former Ganley dealership and apartment demolished for a new Discount Drug Mart.

Dust from a few demolished buildings blew down Detroit Avenue on Thursday. All that remained of the three structures, all within a few blocks of each other, were piles of rubble. The former grocery store at Bunts Road and Detroit Avenue was torn down to make way for a new GetGo gas station. The former Ganley dealership at Detroit and Grace avenues — along with the 11-unit apartment building just south of it — was just a pile of bricks and twisted metal by the end of Thursday afternoon. Those buildings are making way for a new Discount Drug Mart.  A work crew at the site told Lakewood Patch that the entire demolition/removal process could take as long as 30 days, before new construction can begin.

Same here on Grace. I can see my son walking into Garfield MS from my porch now. It's amazing how much has been demolished in just 7 days. It looks like an earthquake zone at the end of Grace and Cohassett. I'll sure be glad when it comes to an end, especially after demolition of Ganley office/house and garages across the street which took 3 weeks with electrical and AT&T cable issues. A reprieve…   more ›

Demolition of Abandoned Grocery Store to Begin

The former Giant Eagle store at the corner of Bunts Road and Detroit Avenue will be torn down to make way for a new GetGo gas station.

The demolition permits have been submitted and approved. The bulldozers are standing by.  The demolition of the former Giant Eagle grocery store at the corner of Bunts Road and Detroit Avenue is set to begin. The abandoned structure — a grocery store that’s gone by a few names in its history — is gutted and cleared out. Demolition is expected to begin next week. Earlier this year, the plans were approved for a new GetGo, across the street from the grocery store chain's current location. Giant Eagle sold its property across the street at 14013 Detroit Avenue to Urban Active in 2007. However, plans at the site to build a workout facility never came to fruition. The building has been vacant since 2007, when Giant Eagle finished its move …

I absolutely despise Giant Eagle. I have stopped shopping there completely. I won't even buy their gas! I don't care how cheap it is. I prefer supporting the small businesses. It would be nice if others would do the same. Send GE a message. I buy my meat at TJ Butcher's Block now. I have always shopped at Nature's Bin and Costco. Sometime's Trader Joe's and Heinens. And, I shop at Moon's for pop …   more ›

Best of the Blotter

Movie-Theater Mishap & Mani-Pedi Refused: Best of the Blotter

The most bizarre police reports from departments throughout Northeast Ohio.

Northeast Ohio police departments have been busy with plenty of outlandish offenses. Here are the weirdest reports of the week. All information was provided by police reports from departments in Patch communities. No mani-pedi here: Charles Swinney wouldn't take 'no' for an answer when it came to his nails. Mentor Police say the 43-year-old Cleveland man went into Asian Nails after several drinks and became irate when employees refused to give him a manicure and pedicure. He had a duffel bag with him and continually reached into it during the confrontation. That made four or five people scurry from the business. He told police getting a mani-pedi was on his "bucket list." He pleaded no contest to inducing panic and resisting arrest and was…
