County Offers Free Assistance with Property Valuation Appeals

Cuyahoga County officials warn against paying third-party vendors when the service is available for free through the county.

If you're looking for assistance in appealing your property valuation, Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald warns against using third-party companies. The county offers assistance for free at the County Fiscal Office and the Board of Revision, according to a press release.  ValueAppeal, LLC of Seattle and Tax Compliance Services, LLC, a company with a Cleveland mailing address, are two of several companies mailing letters to Cuyahoga County taxpayers indicating the county’s value of their property might be in incorrect and that "the owners could be overpaying by thousands of dollars," the press release states. POLL: County Sends Out Property Value Assessments

What do you think of your appraisal? The deadline to file a complaint is Sept. 15.

During the past couple weeks, notices from the Cuyahoga County Appraisal Department began arriving in residents’ mailboxes, informing them of the new estimated value of their properties.  Ohio law requires a reappraisal every six years, for property tax purposes. This year’s scheduled appraisals wrapped up last month — there won’t be another update scheduled until 2015. The Cuyahoga County Appraisal Department is responsible for discovering, listing and valuing more than a half-million parcels.  Those who dispute the proposed valuation are encouraged to visit the county website, to find out how to file a complaint. Question is, when Russo was auditor, he lowered the value on his buddies homes, so they paid less taxes, but some of them have now sold their homes at a much greater value, even in this economy. Plain and simple , it is just a TAX valuation.The home will sell at what the free market dictates, it has nothing to do with appraised value. Kinda like a used car.   more ›

Lakewood Schools Owed $3.8 Million in Back Taxes

Sluggish economy ranks as No. 1 reason for seven-figure tab, racked up by delinquent property owners,

Based on the most current available data, the Lakewood City School District is owed a total of $3.8 million in delinquent property taxes, which would come in handy right now as the district faces a $6.3 million loss in state funding over the next two school years.  However, the seven-figure tabulation can be attributed to the sluggish economy — more so than people trying to skip out on their tax bills, Cuyahoga County spokesperson John Kohlstrand said.  “No one wants to be behind,” he said. “Typically, those who are delinquent are either business or industrial property owners who have been affected by the economy.
