The FBI recently released its annual crime report. Earlier this year, the city released its own report, showing the crime was on the decline in Lakewood.
Do you feel safe in Lakewood? The FBI released its annual report of crime statistics for 2011, which compiles the number of violent and property crimes in cities across the country — in Lakewood. The information is similar to the data that the Lakewood Police Department released earlier this year. Crime is on the decline in the city, and, as city officials have pointed out, most of the reports stem from property crimes — such as petty theft. In fact, of the crimes committed in Lakewood, theft was the highest reported — 795 of them were reported last year. But city officials have also pointed out that it’s not only about how safe residents are — but how safe they feel. So how safe do you feel in Lakewood? Do you feel comfortable walking …

Lakewood police have connected one of the recent Lake Avenue burglaries to an 18-year-old Arliss Avenue man arrested last week during a burglary in progress.
Lakewood police have connected one of the recent Lake Avenue burglaries to an 18-year-old Arliss Avenue man arrested earlier this month during a burglary in progress. The man was arrested and charged with aggravated burglary after a resident in the 13000 block of Lake Avenue told police that there was a burglar in his house at around 8 a.m. Feb. 4. The man, carrying a large knife, took off on foot however police caught up with him near The Carlyle moments later. Lakewood Police Chief Timothy Malley said there have been nearly a half-dozen burglaries in the past month in the neighborhood. Lakewood Police Department’s Annual Review released. Spoiler alert: There's more good news than bad.
Despite concerns over recent reports of robberies and shootings in Lakewood, crime rates are down in the city. That’s according to the Lakewood Police Department’s Annual Review for 2011, released on Wednesday. The 62-page document, laying out all of the criminal activity over the past year, highlights mostly decreases in all of the major crimes categories: breaking and entering; felonious assault; robbery; and auto theft. “One of the thing we always talk about is how cyclical crime is, said Lakewood Police Chief Timothy Malley. “When you look at the numbers, you don’t always see dramatic increases and decreases in crime.” “There are peaks and valleys.” Here are some of the highlights: Malley said there are myriad reasons for the …

Police responded to the home eight times in 2011.
In 2011 alone, there were at least eight police visits to 2051 Waterbury Avenue — the location of last Friday’s shooting that left one 17-year-old boy dead and another Cleveland man injured. Last week, just two days before the deadly shooting, the police department sent notice to the law department that the property was a “chronic nuisance." The law department hadn't sent the letter out to the landlord before Friday's shooting. Charles Wilson, 17, was killed in the shooting at 2051 Waterbury Ave. Friday night, and 20-year-old Frederick Burt was shot in the leg, but treated and released from MetroHealth Medical Center. But weeks and months before the shooting, the home at 2051 Waterbury Ave. was on the radar of the Lakewood police. Some of…

I too, have an older home. The best investment I made which resulted in lower heating bills was new windows. upstairs and down. Drawback to Lakewood homes - small closets, sometimes just one bathroom and a 'half bath' in basement. I've always felt safe in my home, safe walking and riding a bike even at night.   more ›
