Lakewood ‘Community Vision’ Proposal Finalized

City officials expected to present the revised plan to Lakewood City Council this spring.

It’s been 20 years since Lakewood’s had a new Community Vision. In 1993, the most important issues facing the city were image, housing, economic development and physical environment. While those issues are still important, city officials set out last year to update Lakewood's Community Vision, a document that outlines the state of the city and provides an outlook for the future. The issues that were highlighted for the new vision include safety, mobility, housing, education & culture, community wellness and commercial development. And this time around, city officials hope to put the document into practical use. The city's planning commission recently reviewed — and OK'd — the new document.  Lakewood City Council is expected to vote on …

Lakewood Finalizes New ‘Community Vision’

Community meetings wrapped up at the University of Akron, Lakewood campus on Wednesday.

In 1993, the most important issues facing the city were image, housing, economic development and physical environment. A lot has changed in Lakewood since then. While those issues are still important, city officials set out earlier this year to update Lakewood's Community Vision, a document that outlines the state of the city and provides an outlook for the future. This time around, city officials hope to put the document into practical use. About 25 people attended the city’s final workshop to update the plan at the University of Akron Lakewood campus on Wednesday night. The issues that were highlighted for the 2012 document include safety, mobility, housing, education & culture, community wellness and commercial development. “The process…

Our goal is to load you with a lot of information about the theme in an immersion course style worksession. The groups will then be working that night to develop a vision statement for the topic heading." Anyone not yet signed up can easily be added to the list serve by visiting the Community Vision page. Questions can also be sent to planning@lakewoodoh.net.    Here are the scheduled meetings next week.  Monday June 25, 6-7:15 p.m. …

Lakewood Eyes New ‘Community Vision’

The last time the city updated it long-term planning document was 1993.

A lot has changed in Lakewood since 1993. That was the last time the city updated its “Community Vision,” a document that outlines the state of the city and provides an outlook for the future. About 75 people attended the city’s first workshop to update that plan at the University of Akron Lakewood campus on Monday night. “The work that was done in the 90s was the first attempt to articulate what’s important to Lakewood,” said Dru Siley, the city’s director of planning and development.  “We’re going to build on that. We’re going to refine it, because the world has changed dramatically in 20 years.” Back in 1993, the planning commission, along with residents, civic and business leaders identified four areas of concern to develop over a …

City May Want to Change 'Community Vision'

The master plan for the city was penned in 1993, and officials want to take a look at updating it.

In 1993, city officials came up with a comprehensive, 180-page document outlining short and long-term goals for Lakewood, called the “Lakewood Community Vision.” But Dru Siley, the city’s director of planning and development, said it’s time to take another look at the plan. “Since that was 20 years ago, council and the administration are evaluating the ideas and progress, with an eye towards updating that vision later this year,” he said. The reevaluation is necessary because a lot has changed since Bill Clinton’s first year in the Oval Office. “There are ideas in the Community Vision that will always be germane to Lakewood and will serve as a benchmark,” Siley said. “But some ideas may have been timely in 1993 and now no longer apply.” …

Peter, as always thanks for taking the time to sit in on these and remain involved. Pat and David, you're both right on track with the steps that are likely to be included as the Planning Commission gathers data and prepares an updated version. This '93 draft has been the basis for alot of work over the years and it's amazing how much ties back to it. I think that it will be a real positive to …   more ›
