'Artist Trading Cards' Show Slated at Breakneck Gallery

Show set to run at Breakneck Gallery from April 20 through May 11.

Trading cards are making a big comeback, and they're not just for baseball or Pokemon anymore. Artists are getting into it. And the trend has arrived in Lakewood. Using media that includes paint, pencil, ink, collage and metal, artists are creating miniature works of art about the same size as modern trading cards. Sean Burns, the co-owner of Breakneck Gallery, said that the Artist Trading Card movement developed out of the mail art movement, with origins that can be traced to Swiss artist M. Vanci Stirnemann in 1996. It’s been gaining popularity since.  “We at Breakneck Gallery asked as many local artists as we could to make as many cards as they could, so we could fill the walls with tiny original art,” Burns said in an email. Madison Avenue Turning Into an Art District?

Don't look now, but there are now a half-dozen artist studios in just a few blocks along the commercial corridor.

In just a few-block stretch, there are about a half-dozen art galleries dotting the landscape along western Madison Avenue.  It wasn’t necessarily planned, but most gallery owners concede that the neighborhood is rapidly gaining a reputation as the spot to buy local art in Lakewood. There have been a few recent gallery openings in a 1,500-stretch of the commerical corridor. Good Goat Gallery opened its doors earlier this year; Crafty Goodness moved into the space shared with Goddess Blessed in February; and the Cleveland Art Market opened at 16806 Madison Avenue in March. That’s in addition to businesses that have already been around — galleries that include Breakneck Gallery and Rockflower Studio. “We have a little art community building …

Ian, I believe you care about Lakewood..I know I do. Ive said, in the past we often agree about a subject. I think it drives both of us nuts when people are anti-business if its not local or "we have enough of them!". They think construction is neat, pretty or perfect. With that said help me understand where youre coming from on this "arts district". The headline asks if Mad Ave IS TURNING into a…   more ›

Good Goat Gallery Opens, Expansion Eyed on Madison Avenue

The new gallery recently opened its doors at 17012 Madison Avenue.

Just several weeks into her new art store, the owner of The Good Goat Gallery is already eyeing an expansion into the storefront next door on Madison Avenue. It's the natural next step. The brightly colored store is one part welcoming and another part whimsical. The new gallery at 17012 Madison Avenue currently features the work of nine artists — in a variety of mediums. Think painting, pottery, jewelry, photography and “upcycling.”  Good Goat Gallery owner Nancy Cintron, a Lakewood native, said she wanted to create a welcoming and positive environment.  “Everything in here is happy, whimsical and humorous,” she said.  Before opening the store, Cintron was teaching art at Beck Center for the Arts, but she also spent time painting and …

BTW, was in a few days ago and THIS is what a shop/store/boutique should be - nicely displayed art work, craft objects and all colorfully and tastefully done. It reminded me of the small shops in Potrero Hill and Valencia St. areas of San Francisco. Shops that spend a bit of time and money on display for their customers; and not just putting up some Lowe's shelving or a few nails on the wall to …   more ›

Breakneck Gallery Opens on Madison Avenue

Lakewood's newest artist hotspot to host its grand opening in October.

There's a new fine art gallery in town. Breakneck Gallery opened its doors this month at 17020 Madison Avenue in the space most-recently occupied by the Pop Shop Gallery. The space is split into two parts: The storefront on the corner of Madison and Cordova avenues, houses all kinds of art for sale. Classic mediums including oil and acrylic paintings, photography and sculptures are sold there. In fact, the Breakneck Gallery features the work of nearly two dozen local artists — which includes music, movies and books. Then, in the attached neighboring storefront there is a featured gallery exhibit. This month, it's the work of Josh Usmani. That work will be sold at the end of the exhibit. Breakneck co-owner Kristen Burns, who runs the …
