What’s Open and What’s Closed on MLK Day

We thought we’d give you the breakdown of local stuff to do — and not to do — on the national holiday.

Editor's note: This edited post was originally published on Jan. 16, 2012. Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and while many have the day off, some spots are still open. In fact, some spots are the places to be. Let's get started: The US Post Office will be closed, and there will not be any mail delivery. Lakewood City Hall will be closed in honor of the holiday. Waste and recycling pickup is also postponed for those with pickup on Monday. There’s no classes at the Lakewood City Schools today, however the high school is still hosting the Lakewood Invitational JV wrestling tournament, starting at 7:30 a.m. The Lakewood YMCA is expected to keep regular hours. Toboggan Chutes Open for Martin Luther King Day

Cleveland Metroparks Chalet will have special hours on holiday.

The Chalet Toboggan Chutes will have special hours on Martin Luther King Jr. Day Jan. 21. The chutes, located in the Cleveland Metroparks' Mill Stream Run Reservation in Strongsville, will be open noon to 5 p.m. Regular hours at the chutes are: Daily admission for tobogganing is $10 for adults and $8 for children 11 and under. One-time ride tickets are available for $4. Group discounts during public hours are available. This year, a newly installed lift takes toboggans to the top of the hill so riders no longer have to carry them up. The twin refrigerated ice chutes start with an initial drop of 70 feet, traveling over 700 feet of ice at more than 45 mph.   All riders must wear gloves or mittens. Free Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events Abound in Cleveland

Tell us what this holiday means to you and how you will celebrate.

Monday, Jan. 21 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For some, the national holiday honoring the prominent civil rights activist is a time to do community service, be it through removing graffiti or picking up litter in a local park. For others, it’s an opportunity to educate themselves about King and his life's work. And for others, it’s a time to just kick back and enjoy the prolonged weekend. Looking for something to do?
