Helping Out Lakewood Neighbors in Need for the Holidays

The number of needy residents has skyrocketed, while funding has dropped. Here are some ways you can get help.

The holidays are a good time to spend time with family and friends, but they’re also a great time to offer a hand to those in need. And, in Lakewood, there are plenty of ways to help. There are a number of organizations — including the Lakewood Community Services Center and the Lakewood Charitable Assistance Corporation — and several hot meals in Lakewood looking to help out needy Lakewood families.  And there’s no shortage of those.  According to the 2011 US Census data, more than 17 percent of Lakewood's population is below the poverty line. That’s high, compared with the state average, at 14.8 percent. The recession hasn’t helped. “There’s just so many people coming through,” said Trish Rooney, the director of Lakewood Community …

Two Habitat for Humanity homes will be built in Lakewood this summer. Organizers could use a hand.

Two Habitat for Humanity homes will be built in Lakewood this summer. Volunteers are welcome. The homes at 1549 Lakewood Avenue and 2070 Dowd Avenue need some help to get finished. “We’re always looking for volunteers,” said Paul Lentini, site manager for Habitat for Humanity. “Some people are more comfortable working at the ReStore and some are more comfortable working on the job site.” For more information, or to volunteer, call volunteer coordinator Kim Pride, 216-429-1299.

Furniture, cabinets, windows, screen doors, bathroom fixtures, tubs, sinks, appliances, tiles, tools, nails, lighting, etc. Some of the stuff is brand new. You'd pay an arm and a leg for lesser quality stuff at the …   more ›

Relay For Life Making Its Return to Lakewood

The event, to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society, is set for June 16.

It’s been nine years since Lakewood’s had a Relay for Life event. The drought is over. The goal of the volunteer-driven event is to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.  Teams of volunteers — from local businesses, schools, churches and families — will take turns walking or running the track under the stars at Lakewood High School. The last Lakewood Relay for Life event took place at St. Edward High School in 2003. “It’s a shame that communities like Brooklyn, Parma and Independent had one, and Lakewood didn’t,” said Louis Wenner, chairman and organizer of the Lakewood Relay for Life. For Wenner, it’s personal.  Both of his parents died of cancer before they were 60 years old. “This is a passion,” he said. “I’ve …

Looking to Volunteer in Lakewood?

City launches its new Volunteer Initiative website.

If you’re looking for an opportunity to volunteer in Lakewood, you’re in luck. The city of Lakewood recently announced the launch of a new website for its Volunteer Initiative. The goal of the website is to “match the enormous talent of Lakewood residents with the needs of community organizations,” according to a news release. Looking to find out where to volunteer? The website lists the organizations looking for some help. In addition, the site will also allow organizations to post their own volunteer opportunities. “We are in a period of scarcity at all levels of government- Federal, State, and Local.” said Mayor Mike Summers in the news release. “If we expect to support many of the services and institutions we hold dear, we, as a …
