What's Open, Closed for Veterans Day Holiday?

Veterans Day is Sunday, but Monday is a holiday for some.

Veterans Day was Sunday, but there may be some government offices and businesses that take Monday, Nov. 12, as the holiday. Here's a rundown of some openings and closings on Monday. All federal and state government offices will be closed. Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles offices will be closed. There will be no mail delivery and Post Offices will be closed. City of Westlake offices, facilities and City Hall will be open regular hours. There is a Planning Commission meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall. Banks are closed. Trash pickup will be on its regular schedule. The city will be doing trash, and leaf pick-ups. The Lakewood City Schools are open. 

Veterans Day: A Time to Reflect

Hundreds of people attended the annual Veterans Day ceremony to honor men and women in uniform at Lakewood Park on Sunday. The event began with the Presentation of Colors followed by the singing of the National Anthem by the Four Vet Quartet.  This year’s scheduled keynote speaker featured Col. David W. Taylor, a Vietnam veteran who retired from the USAR in 1993 after 25 years of service. His awards and decorations include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, two Purple Hearts, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Army Meritorious Service Medals and the Army Commendation Medal. Other highlights of this year’s program included performances by the Lakewood High School Band, and a 21-gun salute by the Joint Veterans Honor Guard. Mayor …

Veterans Day Event Slated for Sunday

Honoring the men and women who have served in the military is a tradition in Lakewood. Hundreds of people usually show up at the annual ceremony at Lakewood Park — no matter how cold it is outside. The city of Lakewood, as well as the Lakewood Veterans Advisory Committee, is hosting the event at Lakewood Park at 11 a.m. Nov. 11. Remembering, Honoring Veterans at Garfield Middle School

Veterans sought to participate in the 16th annual Veterans Day Recognition Program.

For the past 16 years, Lakewood students have had the opportunity to learn about veterans, US history and the importance of Veterans Day. Presented in partnership with Help to Others youth volunteer program, Garfield Middle School is hosting the Veterans Day Recognition Program on Nov. 7. The event is free and open to the public. “I think the most compelling reason to recognize and thank our veterans in the school setting is to provide our students the history of our freedom and the faces behind our freedom,” said Garfield Middle School principal Mark Walter.  “This is such a mutually beneficial event for all involved.” The event will feature the presentations of the colors; guest speakers; the Patriot’s Pen student essay; and the sounds …

Hundreds of people showed up braved howling winds and chilly temperatures for the Veterans Day event at Lakewood Park on Friday. The city's annual observance was a tribute to the men and women who served in the armed forces. The got started with a presentation of colors followed by the singing of the National Anthem by The Four Vet Quartet. This year’s keynote speaker was Capt. Stephen H. Torpey, currently assigned as the Chief of Response for the Ninth Coast Guard District in Cleveland. Other speakers included Mayor Michael Summers, and Lakewood's Poet Lauraete Bill Knittel. A big Thank You to all who have served us in the military. But one has to wonder if Lakewood's Mayor and the rest of the speakers considered Sergeant STUBBY, the most decorated dog of WWI, who just hapens to be a PIT BULL.
