Planning Commission to Reconsider Heideloff Ruling

The Lakewood Planning Commission rejected an application asking for the Heideloff (or Sly) mansion to be added to the city's historical registry in February.

At its meeting Thursday, the Lakewood Planning Commission may hear an appeal over whether the Heideloff mansion should become a historic landmark. In a split decision last month, the Commission rejected an application submitted, in part, by Lakewood Heritage Advisory Board member and neighbor Jeff Weber who urged the home be given the historic designation. The commission can either reject the request for an appeal raised by Weber and various surrounding neighbors of the home — located 13474 Edgewater Drive —or it may opt to rehear the proposal, the Sun News reports. Heritage Advisory Board to Cover Historic Preservation Ordinance

The law on the books since 2008 has come up a few times in the past year. The public meeting is set to take place at the University of Akron Lakewood campus on Thursday.

Given the planning commission’s recent decision regarding the Heideloff property, it’s just good timing that the city’s heritage advisory board will revisit the Historic Preservation Ordinance at its meeting on Thursday. The law on the books since 2008 has come up a few times during the past year.  A recent attempt by neighbors of the home at 13474 Edgewater Drive to make the property a historic landmark was overruled by the commission in a split vote. It would have been the first residential property in the city with the designation, and the fourth overall. Lakewood Finalizes New ‘Community Vision’

Community meetings wrapped up at the University of Akron, Lakewood campus on Wednesday.

In 1993, the most important issues facing the city were image, housing, economic development and physical environment. A lot has changed in Lakewood since then. While those issues are still important, city officials set out earlier this year to update Lakewood's Community Vision, a document that outlines the state of the city and provides an outlook for the future. This time around, city officials hope to put the document into practical use. University of Akron Courses Offered at Lakewood High School

Officials looking to keep students at the high school to take college courses offered by the University of Akron Lakewood campus.

What if Lakewood High School seniors could begin their college education without leaving school property? That’s exactly what's happening with a new partnership between the Lakewood City Schools and the University of Akron Lakewood. For years, there have been programs that allow seniors to leave the high school campus to take college courses.  But officials said that’s what makes this partnership different. School is in session for Bad Girl Ventures. The micro-investment organization is offering classes for hopeful entrepreneurs this fall at the University of Akron Lakewood campus.  And, women looking to get their business off the ground can compete for a $25,000 low-interest loan. Studying Chinese at Summer Camp

Confucius Institute Chinese Summer Camp is part of a new partnership between the University of Akron Lakewood campus and Lakewood High School.

Several Lakewood students have been schooled in all-things-Chinese. The students, from seventh grade through 12th grade, recently wrapped up lessons in language, arts, history and sports as part of the weeklong Confucius Institute Chinese Summer Camp at the University of Akron Lakewood campus. The students finished the week with a field trip to Asia Town in Cleveland on Friday. “Suzanne Metelko from UA Lakewood and the Confucius Institute were great to work with in bringing Chinese cultural learning opportunities to Lakewood,” said Lakewood High School principal Bill Wagner. “I was thrilled to see the tremendous response to the Spring Splash activities and the Summer Institute.” Wagner’s got good reason to be excited.
