Officials looking to keep students at the high school to take college courses offered by the University of Akron Lakewood campus.
What if Lakewood High School seniors could begin their college education without leaving school property? That’s exactly what's happening with a new partnership between the Lakewood City Schools and the University of Akron Lakewood. For years, there have been programs that allow seniors to leave the high school campus to take college courses. But officials said that’s what makes this partnership different. A four-hour-credit Spanish is the first college course offered at the high school, and Matt Heslep, a Lakewood High School teacher certified by the University of Akron, teaches it. Officials had hoped to attract 20 students for the program — and 29 of the 59 students in the high school class signed up. “That tells you how many are …

Branch to offer Saturday MBA classes; the complete course schedule for the fall 2012 semester also released this week.
When it was announced last year that the University of Akron Lakewood campus was opening its doors on Detroit Avenue, officials had high hopes for the growth of the branch campus. It looks like things are rolling along as expected. This week, the UA Lakewood campus announced that it is unveiling its Saturday MBA program this summer. The school also released its first course schedule for the fall 2012 semester. Suzanne Metelko, the director of the Lakewood campus, said the classes are catered to the “working professional. “The Saturday MBA is an example of UA’s commitment to the region,” she said. “The population of young professionals who want a quality higher education experience in a convenient location with affordable tuition is …

Home, sweet home. Startup Lakewood, the city-sponsored initiative to grow small businesses, now has a permanent home at the University of Akron Lakewood campus. And tonight, the organization will get the opportunity to show off its new digs at its monthly event. This month, the title and topic of the event is “Getting Started: Learning from those who took the leap.” “The title of the talk is kind of well-suited to start off the New Year,” Mike Belsito, the director of ideation for Startup Lakewood. “People want to start a new business in the New Year.” He said he’s looking forward to the new space. “I had a chance to tour it, it’s an awesome facility,” Belsito said. “The library was great for us, but the space at the University of Akron …

We caught up the school’s new director, Suzanne Metelko, to talk about the future.
On Wednesday, the University of Akron Lakewood campus hosted its first open house. Prospective students and their parents trickled into the built-out space in the Bailey Building at the corner of Detroit Avenue and Warren Road. On the first official day of classes on Jan. 9, a couple dozen students are expected, said Suzanne Metelko, the director of UA Lakewood. But that’s just the beginning. The school is partnering with Lakewood High School and Lakewood Hospital to offer training in the university’s College of Education and Nursing. Within a couple years, university officials expect "a couple hundred" students to grace the downtown Lakewood campus. We sat down with Metelko to get the scoop on the classes offered, the future of the …

Suzanne Metelko, who helped to recruit the university to Lakewood starting in 2004, is set become the school's first director on Oct. 24.
Lakewood has often been called a college town without a college. For the past few months, there’s been a college but no leader. Not anymore. Suzanne Metelko, currently the vice president at Computer Systems Development Services and a trustee at the Lakewood Public Library, is set to become the first director of the University of Akron’s Lakewood satellite campus. Her first day is Oct. 24. “We’re going to hit the ground running," said Metelko. "I am excited about the opportunity because I honestly believe that this a game-changer in Lakewood.” The new University of Akron Lakewood Higher Education Center opened its doors last month in the historic Bailey Building at the corner of Warren Road and Detroit Avenue. Metelko was one of the key …

Plans still on schedule to open satellite branch in the fall.
Just eight days ago, the University of Akron's Lakewood branch showed only the bones of a facility. Now, the spaces in the Bailey Building on Detroit Avenue are starting to resemble classrooms. The ductwork is done. So is the electrical wiring. Lakewood Development Director Dru Siley said plans are still set to open the school's Lakewood satellite branch in September. This week, workers have been hustling to finish the drywall.
