In his proposed budget Gov. John Kasich points to an increase in general revenue fund spending through fiscal year 2015.
Gov. John Kasich says that his proposed state budget, if passed, would increase the education funding above 2011 levels. In a bold statement, Kasich also noted that state funding for schools has gone up each year he’s been in office, according to a press release issued on Friday. However, that’s a claim that doesn't satisfy some Lakewood school officials. State budget and school officials told Patch that there would be no additional cuts moving forward, despite the loss of federal stimulus money. (See the attached press release at the right) “The governor was insistent that no district receive less dollars than they do today,” said Jim Lynch, the special advisor to the director of the office of budget and management. In a press release, …

New treasurer Timothy Penton presents the district’s financial outlook to the Lakewood School Board.
Just barely a month into his new job, Lakewood City Schools treasurer Timothy Penton already has his work cut out for him. Penton, who recently began the post full-time, presented the district’s proposed five-year financial forecast to the Lakewood School Board on Monday night. And, like other recent five-year forecasts, it revealed that the district is going to need some help if further cuts are to be avoided. “The bottom line is that the expenditures are forecast to exceed the revenue each year through fiscal year 2017,” Penton said told the school board on Monday. “The big picture is that home values are dropping and it is affecting our revenues.” In addition, the state slashed its local funding — to the tune of about $1.5 million in …

Timothy Penton begins part-time on Aug. 1; full-time on Oct. 1.
Timothy Penton started his new position Thursday as the treasurer for the Lakewood City Schools. Well, not officially. He attended the board of education’s annual retreat as a “visitor.” Board member Emma Petrie-Barcelona served as the meeting’s treasurer pro-tem. Mostly, he just listened. Penton is expected to officially begin working for the district on Aug. 1, when he will work part-time, two days per week. He’s starts full-time on Oct. 1. Penton — who is currently the treasurer for the Whitehall School District — will have his work cut out for him. Stepping into his new role, the district is facing a multi-million-dollar shortfall over the next several years. Penton said he’s ready to face the challenges. “I think that Lakewood City …

Berdine comes from the Lakewood City Schools.
Lakewood's loss is Brecksville/Broadview Heights' gain. That's what they're saying to the south, as Rick Berdine is expected to be hired by the Brecksville-Broadview Heights schools as that district's new treasurer. The longtime Lakewood treasurer, who announced he was leaving the district last summer, is expected to be officially selected at Wednesday's board meeting in Brecksville. Mark Jantzen, the Brecksville-Broadview Heights board of education vice president, told Brecksville Patch that the district was in need in a treasurer/chief financial officer. Berdine will replace Karen E. Obratil, who announced her retirement from the district in February. Obratil spent 11 years with Brecksville-Broadview Heights and will soon be headed to …

Whitehall City Schools chief financial officer to join district in October 2012.
After searching for several months, the Lakewood Board of Education selected a new treasurer for the Lakewood School District on Thursday. Current treasurer of Whitehall City Schools Timothy Penton will begin his new gig in Lakewood in October 2012. Penton will replace Rick Berdine, who in June announced his resignation as of Dec. 31, 2012. Starting in October, Penton will work closely with the current treasurer to ensure a smooth transition, according to the release, and take over the post on Jan. 1, 2013. Penton is eager to begin his work for the district, noting in a statement that he looks forward “to making Lakewood my home and serving the Lakewood City Schools as its Treasurer/CFO.” “I very much look forward to working with …

The unions hate Kasich and will vilify every policy he promotes, even when it actually helps schools. He has turned our state economy around and it is now growing for the first time in years. I say keep up,the good work Mr. Kasich   more ›
