The department announced this week that it’s offering residents the opportunity to get some first-hand information about the role of Lakewood’s safety and law enforcement department.

The Lakewood Police Department wants you. Well, the department wants to get you involved. The department announced this week that it’s offering residents the opportunity to get some first-hand information about the role of Lakewood’s safety and law enforcement department. The Lakewood Police Citizens’ Academy is a 12-week program set to begin at 7 p.m. Feb. 6, running through April 24. The program — hosted by the Lakewood Police Department — will run for two hours each Wednesday.  The best part? There’s no cost. Students — required to be 21 years old or older — will learn about a variety of policing issues from several experts. At the end of each session, the graduates are permitted to schedule a ride-along with a patrol officer for one …

Lakewood Police Stepping Up Patrols Tonight

The day before Thanksgiving is known as one of the biggest drinking days of the year. Police will be keeping an eye on things around town.

The day before Thanksgiving is often known in law enforcement as one of the top drinking days of the year — right up there with the Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve. Lakewood police will be paying attention. “We’re going to have some special patrols on Wednesday night,” said police chief Timothy Malley, adding that officers will be posted near some of the bars in the city.  “Don’t drink and drive," he added. "Don’t drink and argue. Don’t drink and make a fool out of yourself.” In addition to the Lakewood patrols, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding the drivers of the dangers of driving under the influence. Last year, during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, 17 people were killed on Ohio’s roadways. Thirty-percent of those deaths …

Police: Crime in Lakewood is Down in 2011

Lakewood Police Department’s Annual Review released. Spoiler alert: There's more good news than bad.

Despite concerns over recent reports of robberies and shootings in Lakewood, crime rates are down in the city. That’s according to the Lakewood Police Department’s Annual Review for 2011, released on Wednesday. The 62-page document, laying out all of the criminal activity over the past year, highlights mostly decreases in all of the major crimes categories: breaking and entering; felonious assault; robbery; and auto theft.  “One of the thing we always talk about is how cyclical crime is, said Lakewood Police Chief Timothy Malley. “When you look at the numbers, you don’t always see dramatic increases and decreases in crime.”  “There are peaks and valleys.” Here are some of the highlights: Malley said there are myriad reasons for the …

Officers charge the employees of nine businesses and bars with selling alcohol to people under the legal drinking age.

The employees of nine bars, restaurants and convenience stores are set to be arraigned in Lakewood Municipal Court today on charges of sales to minors, stemming from a Dec. 2 undercover sweep by the Lakewood Police Department. Lakewood Police Chief Timothy Malley said two underage confidential sources with the police department’s narcotic’s division went into “liquor establishments to see if they would sell any alcohol without an ID.” Out of 46 the restaurants, bars and stores part of the investigation, nine of them did, Malley said. “We get complaints throughout the year on particular establishments,” he added.
