In the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims, early settlers of Plymouth Colony, held a three-day feast to celebrate a bountiful harvest, an event many regard as the nation's first Thanksgiving. Historians have also recorded ceremonies of thanks among other groups of European settlers in North America, including British colonists in Virginia in 1619. The legacy of thanks and the feast have survived the centuries, as the event became a national holiday in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November as a national day of thanksgiving. A line stretched from the Lakewood Community Services Center on Madison Avenue around the corner of Roosevelt Avenue on Monday morning. As many as 200 people braved November’s chill for an opportunity to sign up for a Thanksgiving turkey dinner. LCSC and the Lakewood Charitable Assistance Corporation partnered again this year to provide hundreds of turkey dinners to the city’s neediest families. LCA is donating 100 turkeys for Thanksgiving and another 100 for Christmas; while LCSC also obtained another 128 turkeys from the Cleveland Foodbank. And it’s not just turkeys.
