11 St. Edward Wrestlers Qualify for State Tournament

Eagles grapplers went 6-0 in championship matches at the district tournament over the weekend, according to the Plain Dealer.

It looks like another successful year for the St. Edward High School wrestling squad. There’s only one more goal left to check off the list: The state tournament. The Eagles qualified 11 wrestlers for the upcoming tournament, after dominating the district’s last weekend. St. Ed’s grapplers went 6-0 in championship matches, according to the Plain Dealer. Here’s the breakdown, according to the PD: Two-time state champ Domenic Abounader (183) and Dean Heil (132) both pinned all four of their opponents. Chance Driscoll (126), Colin Heffernan (138), Edgar Bright (145) and Markus Scheidel (152) also won district titles. St. Edward Grappler Domenic Abounader Commits to Michigan

Abounader, who is ranked the 20 among the 20 best wrestlers in the country, picked the school to stay close to home.

Domenic Abounader, the two-time state wrestling champion from St. Edward High School, gave a commitment to wrestle at the University of Michigan. The Plain Dealer reported that Abounader, a resident of Gates Mills, picked Michigan so that he could stay close to home. Abounader is expected to compete at 182 this year and 184 pounds at Pitt, according to the story. The commitment came after Abounader visited — and ruled out — Virginia and Virginia Tech, reported the Plain Dealer. Earlier this month, teammate Edgar Bright committed to wrestling at the University of Pittsburgh.

St. Edward Welcomes Home State Champ Wrestlers

School hosts an event to honor the Eagles' 27th state championship.

Another banner for the gym and a 27th state trophy for the St. Edward High School wrestling team. The school welcomed the squad home with open arms, as a special ceremony was held in the school's gymnasium to honor the team on Tuesday. That's after an absolutely dominating performance over the weekend in Columbus.  The Eagles finished with four state champs, and eight additional state placers. During the weekend tournament, the Eagles racked up 223.5 points. To put that in perspective, the second-place team, Massillion Perry High School, finished with 105.5 points. The St. Edward High School is bring home its 27th state championship wrestling title to Lakewood. That's after an absolutely dominating performance over the weekend in Columbus.  The Eagles finished with four state champs, and eight additional state placers. St. Edward Wrestlers Take State Title

The grapplers from Lakewood win their 27th state crown. We've got some photos from Columbus.

The St. Edward Eagles won the Division I wrestling crown this weekend in Columbus. The eight championship matches Saturday night matter didn't matter too much. The Eagles secured their 27th state title before then. We thought we'd share some photos of the early-round action.

Blair Academy (NJ), the nation's top-ranked high school wrestling team, edged out second-ranked St. Edward Saturday in a Pennsylvania tournament.
