The popular restaurant on wheels opens a brick-and-mortar establishment on Madison Avenue in the location most-recently occupied by Zappitelli’s on Madison.
Just as the new sign was going up, the highly anticipated Jibaro's Pit Stop opened its doors on Madison Avenue this week. The “soft opening” has been anything but slow, said co-owner Elvis Serrano. “We’ve had a great crowd,” Serrano said. “Everyone seems to like it. We had a couple of hiccups, but we seem to have the kinks worked out.” Customers — some of them neighbors — stopped by to introduce themselves on Wednesday. Many of the neighbors remember the other pizza shops that have tried their luck in the space at 14201 Madison Avenue during the past couple years. There have been three of ‘em: C-Town Pizza, Rosario’s and most-recently, Zappitelli’s on Madison. One after the other, they’ve all gone closed. That doesn’t matter to Serrano. …

What small businesses do you want to see move into Lakewood?
With Small Business Saturday here, we recently posed this question on the Lakewood Patch Facebook page: If you could open any small business in town, what would it be and why? Readers had some great answers. One reader said she'd like to open a childrens playland and coffeeshop "for mommies and daddies." Another reader suggested an indoor golf center, but joked only "after ruling out a hair salon/yoga studio/pizza shop. Whle another though that a comedy club/restaurant would work in the old Westwood theater. If you could open any small business in Lakewood, what would it be? Tell us in the comments!

The business cluster of several businesses between Elmwood and Arthur avenues — looks to make the neighborhood a destination for shoppers.
Hoping to get some attention to a cluster of businesses on Madison Avenue, a few business owners got together to form Uptown Lakewood. The organization — consisting of several businesses between Elmwood and Arthur avenues — looks to make the neighborhood a destination for shoppers. “Our primary goal is to unify this neighborhood,” said Rachel Anzalone, who owns Holistic Lakewood. “Our long-term vision is to grow more than just a couple of blocks. Robby Zettler, of Metro on Madison, said the up-start organization will host events and promote the neighborhood through clearly defined marketing efforts — modeled after LakewoodAlive’s Downtown Lakewood Business Alliance. Although it’s just a couple of blocks, the organization includes …

The local bank has gone from 205 employees — company-wide — to 340 in two years.
The offices of First Federal Lakewood bank are at capacity on Detroit Avenue. The local bank is expanding into 13,000 square feet on two floors at Lakewood Center West. And it’s added some jobs along with the expansion. Tom Fraser, the bank’s chief operating officer, said that First Federal has gone from 205 employees (company-wide) in 2010 to 340 this year. Approximately 190 of those jobs are in Lakewood, and more positions will be added during the next year. “We think by taking on additional space, this will give us the opportunity to bring in more jobs to Lakewood — at least two dozen employees back into Lakewood,” he said. The local bank is now among the city’s top employers, just behind Lakewood Hospital and Lakewood City Schools…

The popular restaurant on wheels opens a brick-and-mortar establishment on Madison Avenue in the location most-recently occupied by Zappitelli’s on Madison.
Fourth time’s a charm? There have been three pizza shops that have tried their luck at 14201 Madison Avenue in the past couple years: C-Town Pizza, Rosario’s and most-recently, Zappitelli’s on Madison. One after the other, they’ve all gone closed. That doesn’t matter to Elvis Serrano. The owner of the successful Jibaro food truck says that his pizza shop will be different. For starters, the Jibaro Pit Stop and Pizza Shop will offer other items in addition to pizza — think Cuban sandwiches, plantains and rice and beans. Also, Serrano said the space will serve as a brick-and-mortar base for the truck — complete with a full-sized kitchen. That means that the business isn’t as dependent on the walk-in and delivery traffic as the other pizza…

The building got a major overhaul this summer, and the business in the middle of downtown recently opened.
Just in time for the holidays, Dollar General recently opened its doors in downtown Lakewood. On Saturday afternoon, the city’s newest dollar store at 15311 Detroit Avenue was bustling. A major overhaul to the building — that most recently housed CVS Pharmacy before it moved a couple blocks west — began during the summer and recently wrapped up. Among the upgrades were a new façade, new front and rear doors, a new parking lot, tuck pointing and new lighting. What do you think of the new Dollar General? Tell us in the comments.

That’s Nuts expected to open next month in the space most-recently the home of Labella Cupcakes.
The sign for That’s Nuts — a new business on Madison Avenue specializing in gourmet nut spreads — went up on Thursday afternoon. The new business, located in the space most-recently occupied by LaBella Cupcakes, is expected to open next month. That’s Nuts owner Meilio Bakich, said he’d like to keep a lid on more of the details until the store is closer to opening. “I’m just trying to create a little mystique,” he said, smiling. He shared that the store will also offer a deli, with a menu featuring “healthy and vegetarian” options. There will also be a few gift items — including art and toys — for sale. “It’ll be like an old-school Woolworth’s,” he said. “We’ll have some dollar toys to buy while you’re waiting for a sandwich.” The front …
