Kasich Says School Funding Increased; Lakewood School Officials Skeptical

In his proposed budget Gov. John Kasich points to an increase in general revenue fund spending through fiscal year 2015.

Gov. John Kasich says that his proposed state budget, if passed, would increase the education funding above 2011 levels.  In a bold statement, Kasich also noted that state funding for schools has gone up each year he’s been in office, according to a press release issued on Friday. However, that’s a claim that doesn't satisfy some Lakewood school officials. State budget and school officials told Patch that there would be no additional cuts moving forward, despite the loss of federal stimulus money. Lakewood Schools Construction Plan Moving Forward?

The district received notice that it could get funding approval in 2013, or 2014 at the latest.

In 2007, Lakewood City Schools officials never imagined it would take years to receive the $46 million in funding from the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission to finish the renovation projects on the three remaining schools. But it has.  “We thought we’d get into Phase III within just a few years,” said Superintendent Jeff Patterson. “And now, we are close to five years.” The district received a glimmer of hope that the project could move forward in 2013 in the form of a letter from the state agency. At the latest, the district would be approved in 2014, according to the letter sent to school officials.
