School Safety Reforms Central to President Obama’s Gun Control Proposal

The Lakewood City Schools already have a number of the recommendations in place, but the district will continue to review its safety policy.

President Barack Obama presented a sweeping set of gun control recommendations on Wednesday, with many focused directly on increasing safety measures in schools. According to the Politics K-12 blog, the proposals signal a shift in federal priorities—the proposals ask for increases in school safety and mental health counseling funding, areas the administration has sought to cut in the budget in recent years. Lakewood Schools Officials Look to Update Safety Policy

Superintendent: Safety is our priority.

Update: This post was updated at 2:59 p.m. to reflect Superintendent Jeff Patterson's additional comments (see below). Looking to reinforce the Lakewood City Schools’ emphasis on safety, Superintendent Jeff Patterson brought up the issue again during Monday night’s school board meeting. And it appears as if the district is ready to revisit some of the schools' safety policies. "We are currently in the process of reviewing all of our safety procedures as a result of the Newtown tragedy," said Lakewood Schools spokeswoman Christine Gordillo.
