Police: Crime in Lakewood is Down in 2011

Lakewood Police Department’s Annual Review released. Spoiler alert: There's more good news than bad.

Despite concerns over recent reports of robberies and shootings in Lakewood, crime rates are down in the city. That’s according to the Lakewood Police Department’s Annual Review for 2011, released on Wednesday. The 62-page document, laying out all of the criminal activity over the past year, highlights mostly decreases in all of the major crimes categories: breaking and entering; felonious assault; robbery; and auto theft.  “One of the thing we always talk about is how cyclical crime is, said Lakewood Police Chief Timothy Malley. “When you look at the numbers, you don’t always see dramatic increases and decreases in crime.”  “There are peaks and valleys.” Here are some of the highlights: Malley said there are myriad reasons for the …

Police Blotter: Two Robberies in One Day

The following information was supplied by the Lakewood Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Two Robberies in One Day Two robberies were reported in Lakewood on Wednesday. In the first incident, a woman told police she was robbed behind John’s Diner on Detroit Avenue at around 1 a.m. She said that the man — described as a white male in his mid-twenties, wearing a dark hoodie — knocked her down and took her purse. She didn’t say whether he had a weapon. She said when she got off the bus, the man told her he had been stabbed and needed help. That’s when he robbed her. The woman returned from work later in the day and found her purse on the front porch. The report didn’t say whether her items had been taken.  The other robbery took place at the Star Mart on Madison Avenue at around 7:45 p.m. A man told police that two white males — …

Woman Robbed at Gunpoint in Broad Daylight

Walking on a quiet residential street, woman robbed of her purse at gunpoint.

A woman was robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight on a quiet residential street as she walked to work on Wednesday afternoon. The woman, who works on Detroit Avenue but parks her car on Ramona Avenue, told police that as she approached Marlowe Avenue, a man pulled out a gun and demanded her purse. Still holding her car keys, she walked back to her car and drove to Lakewood Police Headquarters to make a report, according to police. The suspect — described as a white man, between 25 and 30 years old, 5-feet, 7-inches tall, with a medium build — took only the woman’s purse, which contained an unreported amount of cash. Police Chief Timothy Malley said that kind of robbery is uncommon. “It’s actually very uncommon,” he said, adding that last …

Jason: History does teach lessons. If people being armed made a city safe then Dodge City would have been bereft of crime in the 1870's and 80's. Turns out the city had a very high crime rate with homicide near the top. The town was pacified not by arming citizens but strategically disarming citizens in certain areas. I am not a believer in gun control as a general policy but I certainly don't …   more ›
