Readers Sound Off About McDonald's Proposal to Demolish Detroit Theatre

Plans to demolish the Detroit Theatre to make way for the Golden Arches, has got the attention of Lakewood Patch readers.

Fast-food giant McDonald’s is eyeing a move that would demolish the nearly 90-year-old Detroit Theatre and plant the Golden Arches in its place. Although the property hasn't been purchased yet, there have been several meetings — and lots of discussion — about the future of the historic building. And Lakewood Patch readers have been sharing their thoughts along the way. We thought we share some of the best. "Since this would directly impact the street I live on; i am opposed to the idea of Mcdonald's moving to the Detroit theater space. We already have enough challenges on Wagar Avenue due to the bar patrons!!!" - Kathy Curran "I think this is a horrible location! If McDonalds were to be on Detroit, I think a better location would be …

McDonald’s Buying the Detroit Theatre a Done Deal?

City hosting a meeting on Wednesday at the Lakewood Public Library to discuss the fast-food giant's plan to raze Lakewood landmark to build restaurant.

The theater that stood on Detroit Avenue for almost 90 years now faces a wrecking ball, as fast-food giant McDonald’s inches toward a deal to buy the landmark and plant the Golden Arches in its place. According to multiple sources — including the property owner — McDonald’s is getting close to finalizing its purchase of the abandoned Detroit Theatre for nearly $700,000. And there’s little the city can do about it. “The fact is that in this country when an owner of private property chooses to sell, and the zoning code — which controls what happens on that property — says that a buyer who has a use that’s permitted shows up, frankly, there’s nothing we can do to stop that,” said Mayor Michael Summers. “If we were in fact to say ‘no, no, no, …

I just stumbled on to this article and checked out another article that shows a proposed site plan. I am in real estate development and first of all Mcd's won't hand over a check to the owner until they have building permits in hand. That will be a contingency of the purchase contract. Secondly, the site layout is very bad. That's what the planning commission needs to focus on. The cars exiting …   more ›

McDonald’s Interested in Detroit Theatre Property?

Fast food giant eyeing a move from its Sloane Avenue location to better traffic on Detroit Avenue.

The Golden Arches of McDonald’s could be coming soon to Detroit Avenue. According to sources, the fast food giant is eyeing several locations on Detroit Avenue — including the property where the Detroit Theatre was housed until it closed in January. Dru Siley, Lakewood’s assistant director of planning and development, said the city was contacted by the company, which is looking to move from its Sloane Avenue location to somewhere on Detroit Avenue. Talks are only in the preliminary stages, he said. “The only reason that site came up is because that site’s for sale,” Siley said, adding that he is aware of the theater’s sentimental value in the community. “The challenge is always repurposing a theater like that.” The McDonald’s on Sloane …

Greg, just saying that they could make it nice. Even Mayor Summers said so in an article on the Lakewood Observation. He said McDonalds does a lot of research and the fact that they choose a certain location indicates that it's a good place to do business. What's so bad about that? And 2 other things I HAVE been inside the Pub in River, it is very nice and there isn't a spot big enough in …   more ›
