WATCH: Fire Quickly Extinguished at Pride of Cleveland Scooters

Looks like an electrical issue may have been to blame for a fire that backed up traffic on Detroit Avenue for nearly 30 minutes.

An electrical issue may be to blame for a fire at Pride of Cleveland Scooters on Detroit Avenue on Thursday afternoon.  Several squads from the Lakewood Fire Department were on the scene within moments after the blaze was reported at around 3 p.m. Smoke billowing out of the building could be seen — and smelled — for about one city block.  The fire was exinguished within minutes. No one was injured. The fire started in the rear of the building, where mechanics were repairing scooters.  “We were working in the back and I heard a loud ‘pop,’” said one of the employees.  In all, about a half-dozen employees were evacuated, but before they left the building, a couple of them grabbed fire extinguishers and tried to put out the fire before …

Lakewood’s Pride of Cleveland Scooters Owner Opens Shop in Mentor

Phil Waters tries opening a second location again, believes the Mentor store will stick.

Pride of Cleveland Scooters shop in Lakewood owner Phil Waters orchestrated this story once before. Four years ago, he opened an eastside store to complement his longtime Lakewood store. That store called Wickliffe its home, but lived for a brief span because lower gas prices convinced customers to hop back into their cars. This time around, Waters is opening up shop — Cleveland Moto — in Mentor. “This is going to be better for us and more stable for us,” Waters said, comparing his new Mentor-based Cleveland Moto shop to the failed experiment in Wickliffe. “Our Wickliffe store, we took what we could get to capitalize on expensive gas prices.” Waters opened his Mentor Avenue store two weeks ago as prices began to rise once again.
