Construction of the fast-food restaurant expected to be wrapped up by Halloween.
The final curtain is set to close on the Detroit Theatre this spring to make way for the Golden Arches of McDonald’s. Demolition of the nearly 90-year-old-year-old building is expected to begin by May once all the tenants have moved out. Construction of the new McDonald’s — which would move the Sloane Avenue location — would begin shortly afterward. “We’re hoping to have it open by Halloween,” said Mike Lewis, the project manager for the Lakewood McDonald’s. “In construction there are always things that can slow you down.” The project so far hasn’t exactly been speedy. By the time demolition begins, it will have been a year since McDonald’s first introduced the proposal to the city. There have been traffic studies, protests and a series …

Erie Design finds a new home across the street; Hot Spot still looking.
Clarification: Erie Design's last day in business in the Detroit Theatre building is Jan. 27. With demolition plans in the works for the Detroit Theatre — to make way for the Golden Arches of McDonald’s — the other longtime tenants of the building are looking for new homes. After scouting a new location for the past few months, Erie Design found one. Across the street. After 13 years in their current space, the owners of the banner and sign business are moving to 16504 Detroit Avenue. Their last day in the Detroit Theatre building is Jan. 27 The building — at 16409 Detroit Avenue — has been on the market for years with a price tag of $695,000, but gained little interest. With declining attendance in an industry that has struggled to remain…

Lakewood Patch invites readers to suggest the biggest news stories from the past year.
Lakewood has seen its share of big news in 2011. This week, we’re going to run our Top 10 most-popular stories of the year, but we’d like to ask what were your favorite stories of 2011. There’s been plenty of action — so there’s plenty to choose from. We have had a political merry-go-round that started when former-mayor Ed FitzGerald was elected as Cuyahoga County’s first-ever county executive and councilwoman Nickie Antonio was elected to the statehouse. Those changes set in motion a chain of office vacancies, appointments and departmental shifts in city government. News broke at the beginning of the year that the Detroit Theatre property was going to be sold and demolished to make way for a new McDonald’s. There’s been more, too. …

An ordinance, inspired by the McDonald’s proposal on Detroit Avenue, was introduced to Lakewood City Council on Monday that would set the standard for future drive-thru plans in Lakewood.
Drive-thru windows may still be approved in Lakewood, but it could become a lot more difficult for businesses to get them. An ordinance, inspired by the McDonald’s proposal on Detroit Avenue, was introduced to Lakewood City Council on Monday that would set the standard for future drive-thru plans in Lakewood. This isn’t the first time the issue has come up at city hall. Earlier this month, the Lakewood Planning Commission OK’d the proposed changes to the city’s zoning code after Ward 1 councilman David Anderson first introduced the idea in July. “Part of a current and evolving discussion taking place in the community pertains to the impact of drive-thru facilities on adjacent residential areas and the character of our commercial corridors…

Drive-thru windows may still be conditionally approved in Lakewood, but it could become a lot more difficult for businesses to get them.
An ordinance, inspired by the McDonald’s proposal on Detroit Avenue, is moving forward that could shape future drive-thru plans in Lakewood. Drive-thru windows may still be conditionally approved in Lakewood, but it could become a lot more difficult for businesses to get them. The Lakewood Planning Commission OK’d the proposed changes to the city’s zoning code at city hall on Thursday night. The ordinance will now make its way to Lakewood City Council for review. Among the proposed changes are new standards that include: An item that noted that drive-thrus must also have a walk-up window was removed from the initial proposal. Sean McDermott, a Lakewood resident and real estate professional, said he supports the ordinance, but has concerns…

Work on the Golden Arches plans expected to begin ‘immediately.’
Work is expected to begin “immediately” on a McDonald’s at the corner of Woodward and Detroit avenues, at the location of the former Detroit Theatre. That news comes after Thursday’s approval by the Lakewood Planning Commission to allow the fast-food giant to combine two parcels of land at the site. The commission also granted McDonald’s a conditional use permit to allow an accessory parking lot in a residential district — at the rear of the property. That didn’t sit well with many of the nearly 100 people packed into Lakewood Auditorium — many of whom opposed the plans from the beginning. Neighbors say they are concerned about the increased traffic and safety issues they expect following the construction of a double drive-thru McDonald’s…

City officials hoping to address residents’ concerns over traffic, safety.
Looking to address residents' concerns, the city of Lakewood hopes to install a traffic signal at the intersection of Woodward and Detroit avenues — the site of a proposed McDonald’s. City officials submitted an evaluation this week to the Ohio Department of Transportation, recommending a signal at the intersection. But the signal’s need isn’t based on motor vehicle traffic. Dru Siley, the city’s planning and development director, said it’s the pedestrian traffic — mostly by students — that makes a signal necessary. “We’re nowhere near the car volume (required), but with the pedestrian volume we feel that we have a good cause to warrant a school crossing,” he said. The city is asking ODOT to pick up most of the tab for the proposed signal…

Neighbors concerned with traffic, safety.
When it comes to the proposal to build a McDonald’s at the site of the former Detroit Theatre, some Lakewood residents are not lovin’ it. And they are taking their disapproval to the streets. Residents are set to protest the plan at 5:30 tonight at the location of the proposed fast-food restaurant at the intersection of Detroit and Woodward avenues. Neighbors say they are concerned about the increased traffic and safety issues they expect following the construction of a double drive-thru McDonald’s — with its proposed two entrances and two exits on Woodward Avenue, a residential street of more than 100 homes. This isn’t the first time residents have spoken up on the issue. More than 150 people attended the first public hearing in June to …

@Alex Vandehoff: The Sloane McD's IS "out of the way", in comparison to the Detroit theater site. The Sloane location has been there for a long, long time; it's not replacing a beloved Lakewood icon (yeah, nobody on Woodward had the money to buy it - that really does make them a bunch of losers! Good observation there, sir.) It sounds like you live relatively close to Sloane. Congratulations on …   more ›
