Crews take down the signs, Golden Arches and the recognizable roof. The structure will now be renovated to make way for the Nature's Bin training center and catering space.
After more than 50 years on Sloane Avenue, the Golden Arches of McDonald's were brought down on Friday morning. It was part of the plan to “de-arch” the McDonald’s so that it can be converted into a new catering space for Nature’s Bin. The Sloane Avenue location of McDonald’s moved to its new home on the site of the former Detroit Theatre. Earlier this year, officials announced that McDonald’s was selling the property to its eastern neighbor, Cornucopia (Nature’s Bin). The building will be used as the vocational training center, kitchen and catering center for Nature’s Bin, which provides employment opportunities for people with disabilities. The project has gotten some help from neighbors. Part of the extensive renovation was paid for by …

It’s been nearly two years since the Detroit Theatre closed its doors after nearly 90 years in business. The new fast-food restaurant that replaced the theater is now open.
It’s been almost two years since the Detroit Theatre closed its doors after nearly 90 years in business. Just months after that, McDonald’s announced plans to plant the Golden Arches in its place. Here’s the timeline since January 2011, when the Detroit Theatre closed its curtain for the last time. Jan. 30, 2011: The last movie, "True Grit," was shown at the Detroit Theatre. April: McDonald’s begins discussions with the city about closing the Sloane Avenue location, and re-opening somewhere else in the city. June 15: More than 150 residents attend a community meeting to discuss the proposal. July 14: McDonald's representatives present initial plans to city officials. July 29: Inspired by the McDonald’s proposal, city begins plans to …

The new fast food restaurant plants the Golden Arches at the site of the former Detroit Theatre.
Popcorn and classic films on Detroit Avenue are now a distant memory. They were replaced by the Golden Arches of McDonald’s, which opened its new restaurant Monday on the property that once housed the Detroit Theatre. Lakewood school students streamed in on Monday afternoon after their classes had ended. Most of the seats were taken. The new restaurant doesn’t bear much resemblance to the old McDonald’s on Sloane Avenue that closed its doors last month. The idea behind the design, is a “modern, coffee-house feel,” said one employee. There’s a large-screen TV, and outlets lining the walls for laptops. “The employees are also really excited to work in a brand new modern McDonald's kitchen and restaurant,” said employee Christine Studer. But the new McDonald’s construction is ahead of schedule, slated to open on Oct. 3.
The McDonald’s on Sloane Avenue has closed it doors. And the new restaurant on Detroit Avenue — on the land of the former Detroit Theatre — is ahead of schedule, just weeks away from its grand opening. Mike Lewis, the construction project manager for McDonald’s, recently told Lakewood Patch that he hoped to open the fast-food restaurant by Halloween. But it looks like the project will finish almost a month ahead of schedule. Signs posted around the abandoned building on Sloane Avenue note that the new McDonald’s will open at 11 a.m. Oct. 3. That property will be the future home of an expanded Nature's Bin. Dozens of workers buzzed around the construction site this week, pouring and smoothing out the new concrete around the property. …

An online listing notes that the sale is a “rare opportunity to acquire a single tenant ground lease” at the location at 16403 Detroit Avenue — the former home of the Detroit Theatre.
The Golden Arches, walls and windows aren’t even up yet, but the location of the new McDonald’s is already for sale. The Zaremba Group — the Lakewood-based company that owns the land — has the property listed on the market for $1.75 million. An online listing notes that the sale is a “rare opportunity to acquire a single tenant ground lease” at the location at 16403 Detroit Avenue — the former home of the Detroit Theatre. McDonald’s does not own the land, but rather has signed a 20-year lease with options for additional years — as many as 30 years. One official said that the deal “doesn’t change anything on the ground,” because the McDonald’s franchisee is still the operator. The new fast-food chain, moving from the Sloane Avenue location…

Construction work begins on the new fast-food restaurant on the site of the former Detroit Theatre.
What was once the location for movies and popcorn will now be the home to Big Macs and french fries. Construction work for the new McDonald’s began last week at the site of the former Detroit Theatre on Detroit Avenue. The project recently hit a snag, when crews leveling out the property struck a gas line. The new McDonald’s is expected to open in the fall, officials recently told Lakewood Patch.

Once the Golden Arches come down, Nature's Bin is looking to move into a redesigned building. It won't look much like a McDonald's.
In the land of Ronald McDonald, taking apart a shuttered McDonald’s is known as “de-arching.” That’s the process about to take place at the fast food restaurant on Sloane Avenue, as it moves to its new home on the site of the former Detroit Theatre. Last month, officials announced that McDonald’s was selling the property to its eastern neighbor, Cornucopia (Nature’s Bin). The building will be used as the vocational training center, kitchen and catering center for Nature’s Bin, which provides employment opportunities for people with disabilities. But first, there are a few building design hurdles. According to the application to the city’s architectural board of review, the fast food giant is requesting a few changes — including the …

Firefighters get in a couple of training exercises at the Detroit Theatre as demolition crews get ready to tear the structure down to make way for McDonald’s.
If someone screamed fire in the Detroit Theatre on Thursday, that would have been just fine. There were plenty of firefighters around. As demolition crews prepare to take down the 90-year-old theater to make way for the Golden Arches of McDonald’s, the Lakewood Fire Department was on hand to get some practice. Firefighters practiced a few drills in the vacated structure — as well as on top of the building. “That building served the community for many years, and it’s serving the community one last time, by helping to train firefighters," said Lakewood Fire Chief Scott Gilman. "They’re getting skills that they’ll use for years to come. It’s beneficial to everybody.” Gilman said that some of the interior demolition has already begun, which …

Sale, on everything from signs to seats, continues today at the 88-year-old movie theater set for demolition this spring.
At the end of an era, everything must go. Seats, posters and other memorabilia were all sold Saturday at the Detroit Theatre. Plans are in the works for the building's demoltion to make way for a McDonald's this spring. A few dozen people attended the sale, expected to continue today from 1 to 5 p.m. Those who came prepared with their own tools and a truck ready to haul stuff away were most successful. Old, red theater seats were sold for $18 each. But if more than six were bought, the price dropped to $15 each. The best — or rather best-known movie posters went quickly — all that was left a half-hour into the sale were posters of Disney's "Mars Needs Moms" which never even had a chance to run at the theater before it closed. Many items …
