Toboggan Chutes Open for Martin Luther King Day

Cleveland Metroparks Chalet will have special hours on holiday.

The Chalet Toboggan Chutes will have special hours on Martin Luther King Jr. Day Jan. 21. The chutes, located in the Cleveland Metroparks' Mill Stream Run Reservation in Strongsville, will be open noon to 5 p.m. Regular hours at the chutes are: Daily admission for tobogganing is $10 for adults and $8 for children 11 and under. One-time ride tickets are available for $4. Group discounts during public hours are available. This year, a newly installed lift takes toboggans to the top of the hill so riders no longer have to carry them up. The twin refrigerated ice chutes start with an initial drop of 70 feet, traveling over 700 feet of ice at more than 45 mph.   All riders must wear gloves or mittens. Lakewood High School Students Join in MLK Day of Service

Students devote part of their day off to serve the community.

Sixty inspired students from Lakewood High School woke with a civic purpose this morning: devote part of their day off school to serve others around Lakewood to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. From 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. groups of students dispersed around the city and assisted with lessons and playtime at Lakewood childcare centers, prepared materials for story time at Lakewood Public Library, socialized and played bingo with residents at Crestmont North Nursing Home, made valentines for U.S. soldiers serving overseas at Lakewood Alive, and canvassed 150 houses on the north side of town to collect 300 personal hygiene items for clients of North Coast Health Ministry. Churches throughout the United States spent Sunday honoring the fallen civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church in Rocky River is a congregation that prides itself as being a welcoming, non-oppressive, liberal, religious sanctuary. “We gather to grieve and mourn again each year. We wonder what might have been if not for one bullet. It is not only the loss of a leader, but of a symbol of hope,” said intern minister Ellen Carvill-Ziemer. For this occasion, she conducted a sermon aimed at highlighting the message of King’s struggle.
