If You Could Open Any Small Business, What Would It Be?

What small businesses do you want to see move into Lakewood?

With Small Business Saturday here, we recently posed this question on the Lakewood Patch Facebook page: If you could open any small business in town, what would it be and why? Readers had some great answers. One reader said she'd like to open a childrens playland and coffeeshop "for mommies and daddies." Another reader suggested an indoor golf center, but joked only "after ruling out a hair salon/yoga studio/pizza shop. Whle another though that a comedy club/restaurant would work in the old Westwood theater. If you could open any small business in Lakewood, what would it be? Tell us in the comments!

I would open a Lolly The Trolly line (but name it Holly the Trolly instead) to cruise Madison, Detroit shopping and drinking establishments. That way folks could hop on and off to buy drinks and pizzas without getting parking and DUI tickets.   more ›

Going All Out on a Gingerbread House in Lakewood

Hotel and Leisure Advisors is one of about two-dozen participants in the Gingerbread House Tour, the second-annual holiday event sponsored by Downtown Lakewood.

Hotel and Leisure Advisors is an industry-leading consulting firm for hotels, amusement parks and water parks all over the country. However, the Lakewood-based business is getting pretty good at making gingerbread houses, too. A half-dozen of the company’s employees spent nearly 50 hours building the one on display at Rozi’s Wine House on Detroit Avenue. Appropriately sticking with the hotel-and-leisure theme, the company built an elaborate ski lodge made of gingerbread — with all the trimmings. Last year, the team built a holiday-themed gingerbread waterpark. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill gingerbread houses. The roof of Elf Mountain Lodge is layered with chocolate Necco Wafers; Nerds are crafted as coals in the fireplace; the elves …

Keyhole Gallery Celebrating One Year Anniversary With Birthday Bash

Event set for Saturday at Detroit Avenue location.

As a way to thank the neighborhood for its support, the Keyhole Gallery is hosting a birthday bash Saturday. What would a party bash be without giveaways, live music, raffles, art and art demonstrations? The event is slated to take place at the gallery at 11817 Detroit Avenue, from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday. Food trucks will be parked along Detroit Avenue selling food and drinks. A special art doll show will be set up inside the shop, featuring local artists — as well as doll artists from across the country. The party is free and open to the public. Keyhole Gallery owner Therese Taylor said the event is the perfect way to the thank Lakewood — and her Detroit Avenue neighbors — for their support during the past year. More than 40 artists …
