WATCH: Oldest Lakewood Resident Celebrates 104th Birthday

Margaret Steffen celebrated her 104th birthday at the Lakewood Senior Health Campus with friends and family at her side on Tuesday.

In 1909, bubblegum, penicillin, traffic signals, and FM radio hadn’t been invented yet. The Star Spangled Banner was not yet the National Anthem. That year — on Jan. 22 — Lakewood resident Margaret Steffen was born. On Tuesday, Steffen celebrated her 104th birthday at the Lakewood Senior Health Campus with friends and family at her side. She’s believed to be the oldest resident in the city. Having just beaten the flu, she was a little sleepy, but still had a nice time at her party.

New Database Examines Lakewood's Nursing Homes

A new online database shows details of recent inspections.

Three nursing homes in Lakewood have fixed the issues they were cited for during the last round of inspections by the Ohio Department of Health.  A new database ranking nursing homes, with scores ranging from “A” (the best) to “L” (the worst), was recently made available online by ProPublica. The marks are based on the number — and seriousness — of infractions. The inspections at three of the city’s four nursing homes took place from July 2011 to February 2012. No information was reported for Crestmont North Nursing Home.  Nursing home officials who responded to calls for this story say the issues were all fixed within 10 days of the infractions, per Ohio law. Patrice Campbell, the president of Ennis Court Nursing Home, said that …

Lakewood Senior Health Campus' Makeover Wraps Up

The remodeled space nows house equipment for the treatment of outpatient dialysis, offers a waiting room and treatment rooms, as well as office space, according to the proposal to the city earlier this year.

The renovation of the Lakewood Senior Health Campus is finished. In its effort to “modernize” the structure at the corner of Detroit Avenue and Bunts Road, the health campus planned — and executed — a major facelift to the property. The remodeled space will now house equipment for the treatment of outpatient dialysis, offers a waiting room and treatment rooms, as well as office space, according to the proposal to the city earlier this year. The idea was to update the facility to partner with the Cleveland Clinic to provide a 13-unit dialysis system on the site, said John O’Neill, the manager and owner of the 150-bed nursing home, earlier this year. “Because of the arrangement with the Clinic, the patients will often be residents of the …

Mayor Summers: It’s All About Safety, Housing and Development

In his second address in two months, Summers lays out city’s focus at Lakewood Chamber of Commerce Luncheon.

In last month’s State of the City Address, Mayor Michael Summers laid out some of the city’s priorities and challenges. Safety, housing and development. For the most part, Summers stuck to the script at Friday’s address to the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce at the Lakewood Senior Health Campus — the location of his very first speech one year ago. “Experience counts,” Summer said. “I’ve learned a whole more since I came here last year.” He started out the address by discussing the shifting demographics of Lakewood. The community, he pointed out, is younger and more diverse. And following the national trend, there’s also more poor people. “Lakewood has always been a very strong, viable middle class community,” he said. “But as we all know, the…

Lakewood Nursing Home Partnering With Cleveland Clinic for Major Facelift

A 13-unit dialysis system planned, along with renovations at the Lakewood Senior Health Campus.

The Lakewood Senior Health Campus is planning a major facelift to its property. Plans were presented to the city last week that would “modernize” the property at the corner of Detroit Avenue and Bunts Road. There are also plans to partner with the Cleveland Clinic for a 13-unit dialysis system on the site, said John O’Neill, the manager and owner of the 150-bed nursing home. “Because of the arrangement with the Clinic, the patients will often be residents of the nursing home,” he said. “The Cleveland Clinic doesn’t have any facilities like this.” The remodeled space will house equipment for the treatment of outpatient dialysis, a waiting room, treatment rooms and office space, according to the proposal. Also, the proposal for the makeover …
