Soccer Rivalry Ends With a Stalemate

Lakewood Community Cup will stay with Lakewood High School as cross-town matchup ends in a 0-0 tie Friday night.

All the excitement in Friday night’s soccer matchup between cross-town rivals Lakewood and St. Edward high schools ended with a stalemate at Coughlin Field. The final score was 0-0. Since the Rangers won last year’s contest, the Lakewood Community Cup will stay at Lakewood High School for at least another year. With both schools’ solid records — Lakewood at 6-1-1 and St. Edward at 7-0-1 — there was quite a bit of anticipation heading into the contest. “We didn’t play our best game,” said Lakewood coach Andy Toth. “It was a very fragmented game. About 25 minutes in, I was thinking this going to be a 0-0 game.” “But, we get to keep the cup."  The rivalry ended amicably enough. Lakewood Boys Soccer Team on a Roll

Rangers go for seventh straight win tonight against cross-town rival St. Edward for bragging rights — as well as the Lakewood Community Cup.

Don’t look now, but the Lakewood High School boys soccer team may be a serious contender in Northeast Ohio. After dropping the first game of the season to Amherst High School, the squad has come roaring back winning six straight games — including convincing victories over local perennial powerhouses Bay Village and Westlake high schools. During their six-game win streak, the Rangers outscored their opponents 27 to 2. Surprised?  Don’t be, says head coach Andy Toth. “We’ve had a pretty good program here,” said the fifth-year coach. “We work very hard. We have a certain philosophy and style of play: we want the ball. When we’re clicking, we’re a very good team.” Last season, the Rangers finished 8-6, but the season before they finished with …
