Barrels of Art in a Lakewood Garden

Rain barrels painted by Lakewood High School students have been installed in Lakewood Community Services Center's community garden.

From a whimsical underwater design to a hard-edged urban spray paint motif, the newly installed rain barrels at Lakewood Community Service Center’s community garden are veritable public art. Painted by 10 art students at Lakewood High School, the five colorful 55-gallon barrels are the latest addition to the community garden located at Madison Park, a public-nonprofit partnership that is in its second year. The barrels are impressive works of art that not only look good but will make it easier to water the 10 garden plots, said Trish Rooney, executive director of Lakewood Community Service Center (LCSC), a food distribution center in Lakewood serves more than 700 households a month from Lakewood, Rocky River and Westlake. “Aren’t they …

Lakewood Weighs in on ‘Healthy Children’ Act

New law requires schools to take on a heavier role in fighting childhood obesity — but Lakewood is all set.

Ohio Senate Bill 210 — known as the Healthy Choices for Healthy Children Act — requires that kids are screened for obesity-related health issues and measure the body mass index (BMI) of students in kindergarten, third, fifth and ninth grade. But the Lakewood City Schools don’t need to worry too much about new legislation. The district — the most-recent recipient of the state’s Stellar Award for Best Nutrition Practices — is already about a year ahead the measure. Nancy Early, nutrition services supervisor for the district, said the district already has the new guidelines in place — and beyond. Carbonated beverages were taken out of the schools four years ago. And seniors at the high school were in the second grade the last time there …

Nancy Early has been doing a wonderful job as nutrition supervisor for the district. There has been a positive upgrade of the breakfasts and lunches and the district is doing an excellent job of helping to identify and assist people signing up for free breakfasts and lunches if they qualify. It would be my hope that the state and federal nutrition people would extend free breakfast and lunch to …   more ›

Old School Meets Sophistication at Lakewood's Newest Beauty Salon

Tease opens with cozy vibe in a bustling block on Detroit Avenue.

You’ll find old school style and sophistication, not playground antics, at Tease Hair and Body Parlor. Lifelong Lakewood resident Nora Swift, a mother of three with her fourth on the way, opened the parlor in early November and has been thrilled with the business at her high-traffic location on Detroit Avenue in the heart of downtown. You can sip from her grandmother’s china while enjoying an array of hair, skin and body services and specials such the “Tease Me” facial – a half-hour, four-enzyme facial that has delightful price of $25. Embracing what she calls the “Lakewood vibe," Swift has mindfully decorated her storefront location. Think antique furniture, crystal chandeliers, unique workstations and an eclectic collection of …

Nora, I've never been to the salon but when I was waiting around for the NERD Ride this summer I was blown away looking inside your establishment. It really is a work of art and I'm proud to have this in our city.   more ›

St. Edward Basketball Rolls Over Benedictine for Another Win

Eagles play signature pressure defense, uptempo offense to run away from Bengals.

CLEVELAND — Could the St. Edward High School basketball team have played a more perfect game Sunday night? Perhaps, but it would have difficult for any team to top the performance the Eagles put on during their 92-71 win over the Benedictine Bengals in the last game of the Villa Holiday Classic in the Wolstein Center. Just for starters, the Eagles scored 92 points — their second-highest total this season -- and finished each quarter with between 21 and 24 points. So they were explosive and consistent. They also shot exceptionally well from beyond the arc — 13-for-21, nearly 62 percent -- and matched the taller Bengals rebound for rebound. So they were accurate and physical, too. Oh, and three Eagles scored again and again and again. Senior…

The man was told the case was a civil matter. Traveling all the way from Uganda, the Watoto Children’s Choir made a stop at the Liberation United Church of Christ in Lakewood on Friday night to perform for a standing-room-only crowd. The group, made up of a few dozen children, performed a blend of contemporary gospel music and ethnic dance for about an hour.
