Shake-Up in the Race for Ohio House District 13 Seat

Republican candidate Matthew Deibel unexpectedly withdraws from the race; John Zappala nominated to take his place in run against incumbent Nickie Antonio.

The Republican Party has nominated a new candidate for the Ohio House District 13 seat after the first candidate dropped out of the race and moved to North Dakota to work in an oilfield. Lakewood resident John Zappala will replace Matthew Deibel, who dropped out of the contest last month and moved out of Ohio. Zappala will square off Nov. 6 against incumbent Nickie Antonio for the Ohio House seat.  Brent Lawler, of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, said that the Republican Party had until Aug. 13 to nominate a replacement. The party did so on July 9, tapping Zappala for the contest. Lawler said the nomination — while unusual — followed the rules of the Ohio Revised Code. “I don’t recall ever seeing a withdrawal like this,” he said, …

City Council Candidates Field Questions on Housing at Debate

Candidates for city council took turns answering questions on housing from audience members at Tuesday's debate.

The 2010 US Census found the number of vacant houses in Lakewood nearly doubled since 2000. That certainly caught the eye of city council members. Candidates for Lakewood City Council in the Nov. 8 election met for a public debate Tuesday at the Woman’s Club Pavilion in Lakewood Park. The event was hosted by the League of Women Voters Cuyahoga Area. Council At-Large Ryan Nowlin said he plans to work with Mayor Michael Summers’ administration to inform homeowners of the programs and assistance available to help them take care of their homes. “We live in a neighborhood full of beautiful century homes that need a lot of tender loving care,” Nowlin said. Nowlin is being challenged by John Zappala, a small business owner. In response to an …
