Food Trucks Coming to Lakewood?

The owner of Jibaro spoke out at a recent city council meeting, but a change to the city ordinance isn’t likely to happen overnight — if it happens at all.

The owner of the Jibaro food truck is hoping to change an ordinance prohibiting food trucks from setting up shop on public property in Lakewood. Elvis Serrano, who recently opened the brick-and-mortar Jibaro Pit Stop in Lakewood, spoke at the Lakewood City Council meeting on Dec. 17 to change the minds of city council members. The next day, he met with Ward 3 city councilman Shawn Juris to discuss the proposal. Serrano was an early pioneer of food trucks in Cleveland, launching his in 1993. He sees the food truck industry working in cooperation with area restaurants — not hurting them. “At first, restaurants in Cleveland didn’t support it either,” said Serrano, noting that neighboring restaurants were threatened by food trucks, but soon …

Lakewood needs to get its head out of the ground and move into this century. People, who pay taxes, want the food trucks! And I don't want to have to go to some overcrowded event to get to one!   more ›

Jibaro's Pit Stop Officially Open on Madison Avenue

The popular restaurant on wheels opens a brick-and-mortar establishment on Madison Avenue in the location most-recently occupied by Zappitelli’s on Madison.

Just as the new sign was going up, the highly anticipated Jibaro's Pit Stop opened its doors on Madison Avenue this week. The “soft opening” has been anything but slow, said co-owner Elvis Serrano. “We’ve had a great crowd,” Serrano said. “Everyone seems to like it. We had a couple of hiccups, but we seem to have the kinks worked out.” Customers — some of them neighbors — stopped by to introduce themselves on Wednesday. Many of the neighbors remember the other pizza shops that have tried their luck in the space at 14201 Madison Avenue during the past couple years. There have been three of ‘em: C-Town Pizza, Rosario’s and most-recently, Zappitelli’s on Madison.  One after the other, they’ve all gone closed. That doesn’t matter to Serrano. …

Jibaro Food Truck Finds ‘Pit Stop’ at New Pizza Shop

The popular restaurant on wheels opens a brick-and-mortar establishment on Madison Avenue in the location most-recently occupied by Zappitelli’s on Madison.

Fourth time’s a charm? There have been three pizza shops that have tried their luck at 14201 Madison Avenue in the past couple years: C-Town Pizza, Rosario’s and most-recently, Zappitelli’s on Madison.  One after the other, they’ve all gone closed. That doesn’t matter to Elvis Serrano. The owner of the successful Jibaro food truck says that his pizza shop will be different. For starters, the Jibaro Pit Stop and Pizza Shop will offer other items in addition to pizza — think Cuban sandwiches, plantains and rice and beans.  Also, Serrano said the space will serve as a brick-and-mortar base for the truck — complete with a full-sized kitchen.  That means that the business isn’t as dependent on the walk-in and delivery traffic as the other pizza…
