Planning Commission to Reconsider Heideloff Ruling

The Lakewood Planning Commission rejected an application asking for the Heideloff (or Sly) mansion to be added to the city's historical registry in February.

At its meeting Thursday, the Lakewood Planning Commission may hear an appeal over whether the Heideloff mansion should become a historic landmark. In a split decision last month, the Commission rejected an application submitted, in part, by Lakewood Heritage Advisory Board member and neighbor Jeff Weber who urged the home be given the historic designation. The commission can either reject the request for an appeal raised by Weber and various surrounding neighbors of the home — located 13474 Edgewater Drive —or it may opt to rehear the proposal, the Sun News reports. If the existing ruling stands, the 100-year-old home will most likely be demolished to make way for a $2 million lakefront mansion. If it is added to the historical registry, …

According to the county property search, Jeff Weber lives about one mile away form the property in question. Not what I'd call a 'neighbor' so much as a meddler. As a matter of fact, his house was built in the 1930s and I think it's pretty. Anyone else want to join me in trying to get it designated historic?   more ›

Rehearing for Heideloff Ruling Slated for Next Week

The meeting is scheduled to take place in the auditorium at Lakewood City Hall at 7 p.m. March 7.

The neighbors who’d hoped to make the Heideloff estate a historic landmark are going to try again next week. The planning commission will decide whether to rehear the case, after ruling last month — in a split vote — to deny the property the historic landmark status.  In the appeal letter, neighbor Mary Breiner points out several reasons why the planning commission should revisit the issue.  According to the appeal, those issue are: To see the entire appeal, click on the PDF at right. The meeting is scheduled to take place in the auditorium at Lakewood City Hall at 7 p.m. March 7. Really ?!...they just can't seem to stop themselves, and yes their connections to the city powers are strong and long.....What a shame. What a waste of time. What a waste of energy that could be used helping someone in need. I really feel badly for the owners.   more ›

Heritage Advisory Board to Cover Historic Preservation Ordinance

The law on the books since 2008 has come up a few times in the past year. The public meeting is set to take place at the University of Akron Lakewood campus on Thursday.

Given the planning commission’s recent decision regarding the Heideloff property, it’s just good timing that the city’s heritage advisory board will revisit the Historic Preservation Ordinance at its meeting on Thursday. The law on the books since 2008 has come up a few times during the past year.  A recent attempt by neighbors of the home at 13474 Edgewater Drive to make the property a historic landmark was overruled by the commission in a split vote. It would have been the first residential property in the city with the designation, and the fourth overall. The others are St. James Catholic Church, the Oldest Stone House and the First Church of Christ, Scientist. The neighbors have appealed the planning commission’s decision. The …

Neighbors Appeal Planning Commission Decision on Heideloff Home

Last week, the Lakewood Planning Commission voted — in a split decision — that the home at 13474 Edgewater Drive should not be designated a historic property.

As expected, the neighbors of the 100-year-old Heideloff home filed an appeal regarding the Lakewood Planning Commission’s split decision that denied their request to make the home a historic landmark. Per the city code, the applicant had 10 days to appeal.  “This is the same board that will hear our appeal,” said Jeff Weber, a neighbor of the Heideloff home and advocate for saving it. “I just don’t know. We’re arguing with the same information.” Last week, the Lakewood Planning Commission voted — in a split decision — that the Heideloff property should not be designated a historic property. Neighbors told Lakewood Patch following the meeting that they planned to appeal the decision. The home at 13474 Edgewater Drive is expected to be …

Lakefront Residents Form Overlook Park Neighborhood Association

Starting with just six members, the organization now boasts 167 members.

The idea that the Heideloff mansion on Edgewater Drive could be demolished initially prompted a group of residents along the lakefront to form a neighborhood association. But that was just the beginning. Starting with just six members late last year, the Overlook Park Neighborhood Association now has 167 members out of about 260 residents in the neighborhood it encompasses. The association includes the streets stretching from Nicholson to Belle avenues and is bordered by Lake Avenue and Lake Erie to the north. Gaynel Mellino, a resident of Edgewater Drive and president of the organization, said the idea of the neighborhood association came about because of the possibility that the Heideloff estate could be demolished. But the scope of the …

Hi DLSJR - not sure I totally agree a "modern" design would detract from this neighborhood. There are a lot of ordinary, Cape Cod style homes in this area - nothing special that one can't find in any Midwest suburb. I think Lakewood needs to have some modern/21st century architecture. It will contemporary the building stock that in many blocks of this city has seen better days! Remember, old …   more ›

Owner of Heideloff Mansion Looks to Demolish the Home

Meanwhile, neighbors are proposing to make the 98-year-old house the city’s fourth-ever historic landmark.

After neighbors recently submitted paperwork to make the Heideloff mansion on Edgewater Drive a historic landmark, the property owners have proposed to demolish the 98-year-old home. The owners of the home, Michael and Stacey Semaan, submitted paperwork to demolish the home at 13474 Edgewater Drive. That proposal will be heard at the city’s architectural board of review next Thursday. Meanwhile, neighbors are attending the planning commission meeting Thursday looking to make the property the city’s fourth-ever historic landmark. That proposal must first get the green light from the city’s planning commission in two public hearings. The designation means that demolishing the 98-year-old home would be next to impossible. Under the city’s …
