Second Habitat Home Opens in Lakewood

Family gets settled into new home at 1549 Lakewood Avenue; special ceremony marks its completion.

The second Habitat for Humanity home ever built in Lakewood opened its doors to a new family on Saturday. The organization marked the opening of the Lakewood Avenue home with a special ceremony, with volunteers and city officials in attendance.  Our news partners at NewsNet 5 reported that also attending the event was the Simmons family — the new home’s occupants. The project at 1549 Lakewood Avenue began in August 2012. The home, sitting at the corner of Lakewood Avenue and Franklin Boulevard, sits at the site of a former apartment complex deemed a “nuisance” by the city and demolished in August 2011.  Habitat partnered with the city, Wells Fargo, Neighborhood Housing Services and First Federal of Lakewood to build the home. Earlier this …

This Inspiring Story Brought to You by Grape-Nuts

Lake Catholic High School Director Takes on Humanitarian Role in Uganda

Debbie Jarosz has transformed from somebody who has never been to Uganda to a board director on a nonprofit organization dedicated to support the residents of the country. Sponsored by Grape-Nuts.

About this sponsorship: In honor of the 60th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary's historic ascent of Mount Everest, Patch and Grape-Nuts are teaming up to highlight those who inspire people around them to climb their own mountains. For Debbie Jarosz, who has traveled to Uganda to build homes and improve medical care and education in Uganda, one of the most difficult parts of her philanthropic efforts is asking for money to fund to support those goals.  “I understand that everyone has different priorities regarding issues that need to be addressed, and where their hard-earned money should go, but I am determined to convince others that this is a worthwhile endeavor, and that their sacrifices to help these people will be used efficiently and …

Lakewood’s First-Ever Habitat Home Dedicated on Dowd Avenue

A special dedication event took place at the new home on Saturday.

The journey that began a year ago to build the first-ever Habitat for Humanity home in Lakewood ended on Saturday, when the house at 2070 Dowd Avenue was dedicated. More than 60 people attended the event, including the new owner Valerie Stuart and her family. The home marked only the second time that Habitat for Humanity has built a home outside of the city of Cleveland. Construction of the home at 2070 Dowd Avenue — the same address of a home deemed a “persistent blight” and demolished in 2009 — began first, in June. A second Habitat project, at 1549 Lakewood Avenue, began in August. That home, sitting at the corner of Lakewood Avenue and Franklin Boulevard, sits at the site of a former apartment complex deemed a “nuisance” by the city …

Habitat for Humanity Homes Almost Ready for Families

The homes at 2070 Dowd Avenue and 1549 Lakewood Avenue are both energy efficient and built with materials that “blend in” with their respective neighborhoods.

The construction of Lakewood’s first two Habitat for Humanity homes is almost finished. The homes will be ready for families within the next couple of months. However, these aren’t your mother’s Habitat for Humanity homes. Both of the new Habitat homes are energy efficient and built with materials that “blend in” with their respective neighborhoods. Construction of the home at 2070 Dowd Avenue — the same address of a home deemed a “persistent blight” and demolished in 2009 — began first, in June. With the exterior of the home finished, it’s the closet to completion. The only things left on the punch-list are the finishing touches.  The project at 1549 Lakewood Avenue began in August. The home, sitting at the corner of Lakewood Avenue and …

Navy Seabees Swarm Habitat for Humanity Construction Site

As part of Navy Week in Greater Cleveland, a crew of Naval specialists is pitching in to help build the house at the corner of Lakewood Avenue and Franklin Boulevard.

The construction site for the second Habitat for Humanity home in Lakewood was buzzing with workers on Tuesday. About a dozen US Navy Seabees are volunteering their time this week to help build the house at the corner of Franklin Boulevard and Lakewood Avenue.  With the tactical precision one might expect at a base camp in a combat zone, the Seabees buzzed around the Habitat site, saws humming and hammers pounding. By the end of the week, officials hope the walls will be erected.  The effort is a part of Navy Week, and Cleveland was one of 15 cities selected to highlight the commemoration of the bicentennial of the War of 1812, said Lt. Ann Jefferson, a public affairs officer for the US Navy. “We’re lucky to have all the extras that come …

Construction Begins on Lakewood’s Second Habitat Home

Habitat for Humanity home at 1549 Lakewood Avenue to be built at the site of a former apartment complex deemed a “nuisance” by the city and demolished in August.

The construction of the city’s second-ever Habitat for Humanity home has begun. The foundation of the home is expected to be finished this week. The rafters will be done by the end of next week, said Habitat officials. “It all depends on weather and volunteers,” said Jared O’Brien, site manager for Habitat. The home, sitting at the corner of Lakewood Avenue and Franklin Boulevard, will be built at the site of a former apartment complex deemed a “nuisance” by the city and demolished in August. Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity will oversee the construction of the four-bedroom, 1600-square-feet home at 1549 Lakewood Avenue — on land originally considered for a new pocket park. There's already a family ready to move in. Habitat “House …

Lakewood’s First Habitat Home Taking Shape

The walls of the arts-and-crafts-style bungalow at 2070 Dowd Avenue — the same address of a home deemed a “persistent blight” and demolished in 2009 — are all up.

Construction is well under way on an energy-efficient, 1600-square-feet Habitat for Humanity home on Dowd Avenue. It's beginning to look like a home. The walls of the arts-and-crafts-style bungalow at 2070 Dowd Avenue — the same address of a home deemed a “persistent blight” and demolished in 2009 — are all up. The project is moving along smoothly, after officials hosted a "wall-raising ceremony" last month. Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity will oversee the construction of the four-bedroom, 1600-square-feet home. But this isn’t your mother’s Habitat for Humanity. The home will use 50 percent less energy than its Birdtown neighbors, and the architectural style is aimed at “blending in” with the neighborhood. The home is expected to be…

Construction of Lakewood’s First Habitat Home Gets Under Way

Home expected to be "move-in ready" by March. Construction of the city's second Habitat home expected to begin with the next couple weeks.

Construction has begun on an energy-efficient, 1600-square-feet Habitat for Humanity home on Dowd Avenue. The foundation of the arts-and-crafts-style bungalow at 2070 Dowd Avenue — the same address of a home deemed a “persistent blight” and demolished in 2009 — was set last week. The construction crew will fill in the rest of the area around the foundation on Monday, and the rafter will be up by the end of the week, said Habitat site …

As an experienced home builder, I have always been wanting to be involved in charitable initiatives and I got involved in building homes for Habitat for Humanity. Apart from the ones in the United States, I decided to venture overseas, especially in Asia. I traveled across Asia – from Indonesia to the Philippines, helping build homes for the organization. It was quite an experience for me, and …   more ›
