New GetGo Opens in Lakewood

It’s not yet clear what’s going to become of the vacant gas station across the street at Detroit and Manor Park avenues.

The new GetGo gas station has opened its doors — and its 16 fuel pumps — at the corner of Detroit Avenue and Bunts Road.  The 5,500-square-foot gas station was buzzing with new customers this week. The GetGo station — unlike the Pennsylvania-based company’s typical gas station — will offer a few grocery items, prepared foods, a patio and a Wi-Fi café. The business will be open from 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. The site features bio-retention landscaping, helping to alleviate the city’s storm water management issues, a move lauded by city officials. The project didn’t come without criticism from neighbors. Giant Eagle sold its property across the street at 14013 Detroit Avenue to Urban Active in 2007. However, plans at the site to…

I just do not get this, "The site features bio-retention landscaping, helping to alleviate the city’s storm water management issues, a move lauded by city officials." Why do they applaud, when they should DEMAND this??? We are facing millions of dollars to appease the EPA for our lack of... But yet they ban certain breeds of dogs and their owners. They have no idea of real SAVINGS to Lakewood …   more ›

New GetGo’s Sign May Have to Wait

City’s architectural board of review asks the company to modify its plans.

Clarification: The proposal for GetGo's signs were deferred until the next architectural board of review meeting. A new GetGo gas station is coming to the corner of Detroit Avenue and Bunts Road, however the signs that the company proposed are not. A company representing the gas station — owned by Pennsylvania-based Giant Eagle — presented plans for three new signs at the city’s architectural board of review Thursday night.  Board members were less than enthusiastic, taking particular issue with the proposed large digital sign facing Detroit Avenue. “I don’t like this at all,” said board member Michael Fleenor. “Perhaps a smaller sign would be OK. The monument sign is enormous.” George Dragon, of Cicogna Electric and Sign Co., pointed out …

Too many signs is a bad thing, but I would like to know gas prices as I'm driving. If the sign is too small or unnoticeable there could be accidents caused by people trying to read or find the gas prices. The Speedway at the corner of Franklin and Warren has a terribly placed sign. When you are coming from the south on Warren you can't read the price for unleaded gas because of a utility pole …   more ›

New GetGo Gas Station Plans Coming This Week

Updated proposal shows more green space.

The city’s board of architectural review is set to discuss Giant Eagle’s plan to plant a GetGo gas station at the southwest corner of Bunts Road and Detroit Avenue. Officials from the Pittsburgh-based grocer are expected to present drawings to the board on Thursday. At the encouragement of the city, the new drawings show a lot more green space. This won’t be the first time the issue has come before the board. Last month, developers presented initial plans at a special work session meeting at Lakewood City Hall. And a few weeks later, a crowd of nearly 50 people attended a forum to discuss the issue. Some in attendance opposed the project, while some neighbors showed support for the development.  Earlier this year, Giant Eagle informed the …

Get Go Gas Station Plans Prompt Questions, Concerns

About 50 people attend a forum at Lakewood City Hall to discuss the proposal at the southwest corner of Bunts Road and Detroit Avenue.

Dozens of residents filled up the auditorium at Lakewood City Hall on Wednesday to discuss the proposed Get Go gas station at the southwest corner of Bunts Road and Detroit Avenue.  The plan, recently presented to city officials by Giant Eagle, includes a 16-pump gas station and convenient store on the property that the Pittsburgh-based grocer once owned. Many in the crowd came out Wednesday night to express concerns about the proposal. Specifically, they shared concerns over traffic, pollution and lights from the building.  Al Bednarski, who’s lived on Parkhaven Row for more than 30 years, is skeptical of the project. “I don’t like it,” he said. “Who wants a gas station 100 feet from their house? I don’t.” Some other residents attended …

From what I understand Detroit Rd is zoned as a commercial corridor, but looking at the Gas station development plan it looks like the pumps are going to be placed along the Bunts Rd which is not a commercial corridor (?) ... Why not place the gas pumps along Detroit Rd, so those face the main street and the buildings on the far back end of that property? Seems like Architectural Boards are tough…   more ›
