Grace Avenue neighbor shares her thoughts on the progress of the new development.
Construction vehicles; increased traffic; and noise from construction. These are just a few of the concerns of several neighbors of the Discount Drug Mart and Family Dollar construction projects on Detroit Avenue. Although the frames and walls are up, the projects — both expected to be finished by June — aren’t moving along quickly enough for residents on nearby Grace and Cohasett avenues. Signs were recently posted on both streets prohibiting construction vehicles from driving on them. Neighbors reached out to Lakewood City Hall for help. Dru Siley, the city’s director of planning and development, said he’s working with neighbors to address some of the concerns. Marie-France Schreiber, who lives three doors north of the Family Dollar site…

The support beams for the future homes of Discount Drug Mart and Family Dollar are now up.
A couple of new buildings located next to each other are changing the landscape of a city blocks on Detroit Avenue, once home to the Ganley Auto Group. Despite the cold, construction crews have made progress on the future homes of Discount Drug Mart and Family Dollar. The Discount Drug Mart is slightly ahead of its neighbor across Grace Avenue. That project has been a contentious one among neighbors, however Grace Avenue residents won a small victory last week when the city's architectural board of review denied a request for the store to build illuminated signs on that side of the property. Utility issues have held up the progress of the Family Dollar project has been slightly held up by utility issues. Construction of the 9,000-sqaure-…

With new designs, architectural board of review OKs the project.
The city’s Architectural Board of Review approved the plans for a new Family Dollar at former site of the Ganley Auto Dealership at the intersection of Grace and Detroit avenues on Thursday night. Construction of the 9,000-sqaure-foot, single-story chain discount store is expected to begin sometime this winter. Tara Pesta, from mbi/k2m Architecture — the firm representing Family Dollar — was on hand to field questions from the board. The last time Family Dollar’s developer went before the board, the plans were sent back to the drawing board. Criticisms included that the designs needed to feature windows; no split-faced blocks; a variety of bricks; and the façade should have more depth. Pesta said the company was listening. The new designs…

Plans for the discount store at the corner of Detroit and Grace avenues under scrutiny.
If developers plan to build Family Dollar at the intersection of Detroit and Grace avenues, they’ve got to get back to the drawing board. That’s putting it mildly. An architect representing Family Dollar presented plans to the Lakewood Architectural Board of Review last Thursday — and the feedback wasn’t positive. Family Dollar, a chain discount store, is looking to open a 9,000-sqaure-foot, single-story structure in the northeast portion of the former Ganley Dealership at the corner of Detroit and Grace avenues. An adjacent building on the property would be demolished to make way for parking. But don’t expect the construction to begin anytime soon. “There needs to be more articulation to make this more interesting and make it fit in the…

Preliminary plans are expected to be rejected at Thursday's Architectural Board of Review meeting.
Family Dollar, a chain discount store, is looking to open up shop in a portion of the former Ganley Dealership at the corner of Detroit and Grace avenues. The plans call for the store to be built on the northeast portion of the property at 13215 Detroit Avenue. An adjacent building on the property would be demolished to make way for parking. But don’t expect construction to begin anytime soon. Dru Siley, the city’s director of planning and development, said there is still plenty of work that needs to be corrected on the architectural plans. The city’s Architectural Board of Review is expected to come to the same conclusion at its meeting Thursday night. “This is pretty far away from what we’ve approved in the past,” Siley said. “If you …
