Eagles stretch streak to 18 wins after 34-17 victory over Cardinals.
Electric special teams and a strong defense carried the St. Edward High School football team during the first half Saturday night. Running back Dwayne Aaron carried the team — and the ball on just about every play — during the second half. The result? Just another win for the defending state champions. The Eagles struggled to move the ball much against the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals during the first half of their first home game this season, but managed to string together four good enough quarters to walk out of Lakewood Stadium and on to the team buses with a 34-17 win (box score). “We’re a team out here,” junior linebacker Ryan Davis said. “Everyone just goes their hardest. “Everyone’s just together.” Junior wide receiver Anthony Young …

For seasons, Stetson Allie and Alex Lavisky faced the best Ohio had to offer. For one night, they faced each other.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — When Alex Lavisky stepped in at home plate and stared out toward the mound, he wanted to smile, to laugh, to maybe give a hug to the kid out there in the middle of the diamond with the heater hiding in his powerful right arm. Lavisky had stepped in 252 times already this season, in Ohio and Michigan and Kentucky, in Indiana and Wisconsin, even right here in Pennsylvania, but this one was a little different. He was looking out at Stetson Allie, his old friend, his old teammate. But 60 feet and six inches away, Allie had no plans to smile or laugh or trot in and give a hug to the young man who reined in his fastballs on the way to a state championship. Allie had already blocked out the music that blared over the speakers…

Sophomore Anthony Young edged out the win in the 200-meter dash.
On Saturday morning, St. Edward High School sophomore Anthony Young walked around a Columbus mall shopping for new spikes. A couple hours later, he wore a shiny medal around his neck. Young sprinted his way to first place and a state championship in the 200-meter dash at the OHSAA Division I state track and field tournament at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. He discovered Friday that his spikes, perhaps the key piece of equipment for any sprinter, had been stolen from his bag. But Young rolled -- and ran -- with the punches. He crossed the finish line in 21.59 seconds and edged Berea junior Donovan Robertson by .04 for his first state crown. He's already dreaming about more. "I'm looking forward to great things in my future," he …

Kalis among top recruits for embattled Buckeyes
For much of the last year, St. Edward High School lineman Kyle Kalis has planned to play football at Ohio State in the fall of 2012. After months of speculation and scandals, and even after the recent and sudden resignation of coach Jim Tressel amid NCAA investigations, Kalis still plans to move to Columbus and play for the Buckeyes. For now, at least. According to a report Tuesday in the Lancaster Eagle Gazette, Kalis is “upset by the news” of Tressel’s resignation, though his mother declined to comment on how it would affect his recruitment, or whether he plans to open himself to another round of recruitment this late in the process. Other top Ohio State recruits, including St. Ignatius tight end Blake Thomas, Columbus St. Francis …

Delbert Love, who scored more than 1,000 points for the Eagles, had a few schools to choose from.
St. Edward basketball standout Delbert Love announced that he will play college basketball next year at Kennesaw State University. According to cleveland.com, the 6-0 guard — who averaged 17 points and a team-leading 5.5 rebounds while leading the Eagles to a fourth straight regional appearance — said he chose Kennesaw State after considering several other schools. A four-year letter-winner, Love finished his career at St. Edward with more than 1,000 points.

Beaten down, but hardly out, the Eagles have their sights set on a prize that has eluded them – the state championship.
The news on the court Tuesday was good for the St. Edward High School volleyball team. The news off the court was far better. The Eagles cruised to another relatively easy home win in three games, this time over the Stow-Munroe Falls Bulldogs. They trailed for all of five points, maintained control from the first serve to the last, and were able to rest some of their better players and turn the action over to their second team. Fantastic, all of it, for the Eagles. But the bigger and more important revelation arrived several hours earlier when outside hitter Owen McAndrews informed coach Neil Corrigan that he will likely be able to play for the Eagles during their quest for a state championship. This was unexpected. This changed …

Two years ago, Keven Lenahan set out to find vitamins for malnourished orphans. That was almost 1 million vitamins ago.
Last summer, Keven Lenahan boarded a plane bound for El Salvador with little more than a burlap sack of vitamins slung over one shoulder, the crescendo of a year’s worth of work at last within reach. More than a dozen of his friends joined Lenahan for that journey from Cleveland to Central America, each of them with a burlap sack of their own filled with iron and iodine and folic acid in perfect doses. But none of them would have been there without his vision and drive, without his will to do. Lenahan, a senior at St. Edward High School, had wanted to design and deliver an international service project for years, but had never narrowed his vision until late 2009, shortly after he talked with Mary Stevenson, the director of a local …

Seven Eagle wrestlers earn All America honors at the National High School Coaches Association Wrestling Tournament in Virginia Beach.
The St. Edward High School wrestlers, which brought the state championship home last month, enjoyed some national recognition this weekend in Virginia Beach, VA. And head coach Greg Urbas couldn't be happier. Seven of his Eagle grapplers placed at the National High School Coaches Association Wrestling Tournament. One of them, state champion 171-pound sophomore Domenic Abounader, was crowned a national champion. In additional, St. Edward also had six other All-Americans. “They did a tremendous job,” said Urbas. “Our guys are pretty accomplished so I thought we would do well." In addition to the tournament in Virginia, St. Edward saw another of its wrestlers, sophomore Dean Heil, take first place at the FloWrestling national competition at …
