After some tweaking, the city’s architectural board of review gives the green light to the plans.
The plans for the new Quaker Steak and Lube are moving forward at the Drug Mart Plaza on Detroit Avenue. That news comes after the architectural board of review meeting approved the final design plans last week. The Pennsylvania-based restaurant chain agreed to change some of its plans, including altering the signs, usually typical for a Quaker Steak and Lube. But this “concept store” is anything but typical. At 6,600 square feet, this Quaker Steak and Lube is much smaller — and in more of an urban setting — than others across the county. Taking the board recommendations into consideration, Quaker Steak will use a large vintage photograph of the Lakewood on the side of the building. The restaurant agreed to remove the border neon that …

City's Planning Commission OKs two conditional use permits — one for extended hours, and another for a brickyard, outdoor patio.
The city of Lakewood got its first glance inside the proposed 6,600-square-foot Quaker Steak and Lube restaurant, slated to be one of the new tenants of a renovated Drug Mart Plaza on Detroit Avenue. Last week, the Lakewood Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit for a 50-seat outdoor, brickyard patio. The commission also approved a second conditional use permit to keep the business open later than originally planned. According to the plans, the “brickyard,” outdoor patio — located on the Detroit Avenue side of the building — would have an outdoor bar area connected to the indoor bar. The planning commission OK’d the conditional use permits to keep the business open until midnight during the week and 1 a.m. during Friday …

Plans to invest millions in the plaza aren't enough to keep current businesses there afloat.
As renovations to Lakewood Plaza progress, retailers continue to close their storefronts there. The latest is Blockbuster Video, slated to be closed on March 18, according to an employee. It's no secret the national purveyor of movies and video games has been in financial trouble - last April it won it's claim for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, and in December 2011 it announced the Lakewood location would be closing. But the closing will leave another vacancy in the plaza, after Quizno's Subs, Sakura Japan, Four Seasons and most recently, Dots, have all left. Only Discount Drug Mart and Radioshack will remain in the plaza before millions of dollars and new tenants, including chain restaruant Quaker Steak and Lube, will be put into the renocations…

After a departure from the original proposal, city’s architectural board of review approved the project.
Developers for the proposed multi-million-dollar Lakewood Plaza renovation presented the newest round of changes to the city’s architectural board of review on Thursday. After some give-and-take, the board OK’d the plans, but added a few conditions. In a departure from the original plans — because of an immovable gas line under the sidewalk along Detroit Avenue — architects presented new plans last month. The board wasn’t impressed. The renderings for the plaza — also known as the Drug Mart Plaza — showed structure lacking the architectural design that city officials had hoped for. The towers were removed. The landscaping changed. The buildings all had the same height with few differentiating features. In a work session last week, the …

Women's apparel store will bid the plaza goodbye at the end of this month.
When the proposed $3 million renovation of Lakewood Plaza on Detroit Avenue is complete, Dots Fashion won’t be there. The national women’s apparel chain posted signs in the window of its 15412 Detroit Ave. storefront declaring a “Store Closing Sale” and that “Everything Must Go,” despite a promotional sign on the front of the plaza showing Dots as a tenant of the proposed shopping center. A Dots employee, who asked not to be named for this story, said the store will be closing at the end of this month, but there had been some confusion on whether the store was going to stay in the new building. “Like four days after (corporate headquarters) told us we were closing, the City put that sign up that had our name on it,” the employee said. “So …

K II Tavern, sister to Kenilworth Tavern, will open in the old McCarthy's II Ale House space.
It’s déjà vu all over again. It appears another Lakewood drinkery is opening a second location at 33382 Walker Rd. This time around, it’s Kenilworth Tavern opening K II (Kenilworth) Tavern, signage on the building indicates. Managers and owners at the Lakewood Kenilworth could not be reached for comment. A manager at the Avon Lake location told Patch two weeks ago she expected the Kenilworth II would open within the month. McCarthy’s II used to occupy the corner space in the Drug Mart plaza until it was abandoned by its owner, Jack Kraddock, in June 2009, according to Sun News. The establishment carried the same name as its sister location in Lakewood, McCarthy's Ale House. “I got a bunch of young thugs who want to go in there and pick up …

Quaker Steak and Lube moving into the renovated location.
One large, aging city block along Detroit Avenue is about to look a whole lot different. The plans have been approved, agreements signed. Within the next couple weeks, construction is expected to begin on a $3 million facelift to Lakewood Plaza — better known as the Drug Mart Plaza. The Detroit Avenue location has also attracted a big-name tenant, when last week Quaker Steak and Lube signed a lease to open a 5,500-square-foot restaurant in east end of the renovated plaza. Discount Drug Mart is expected to sign its lease next week. According to the plans, the store will expand it size by 30 percent, moving into some of the space formerly occupied by the Sakura Japanese Restaurant. The store will be an anchor tenant in the plaza, which also …

I completely agree with you about Lakewood being a town of local businesses and that's one of the reasons I choose to live here. However, I like the buildout design of this dilapidated building. The Drug Mart is in need a major overhaul and I also believe this corporate chain is much different thant others. They aren't located in every city and will draw people in from Westpark, Rocky River, …   more ›
