The Lakewood Planning Commission rejects some of the drug stores requests.
It looks like the plan for new a Discount Drug Mart on Detroit Avenue is headed back to the drawing board. The Sun Post-Herald reported that the Lakewood Planning Commission denied a few of the drug store chain’s requests at its meeting on Thursday. The commission approved the lots consolidation at the site of the former Ganley Auto dealership, but denied other requests including a lot-split at 1425 Grace Avenue and a conditional use for an adjacent 11-unit apartment building to be used for accessory parking. That means the apartment building won’t be demolished after all. The issue of a conditional use of a drive-thru at the proposed drug store was tabled, the Sun Post-Herald reported. “The planning commission did a good job talking …

New plans show smaller store, with fewer parking spaces, but neighbors say they need more time to review the plans.
Architects and officials representing Discount Drug Mart presented new plans to the city’s planning commission Thursday night, in hopes of finding common ground with neighbors. But residents — who had less than a day to review the new plans — were less than thrilled. The Lakewood Planning Commission was listening. The commission tabled a decision on a request that would consolidate the property and change the south parcels from residential to commercially zoned properties. Drug Mart officials presented redesigned site plans, that included reducing the size of the store from 28,000 square feet to 24,000 square feet, taking away 12 parking spaces and scrapping plans to demolish a 100-year-old home abutting the proposed store. However, …

City wouldn't have supported the purchase and demolition of Grace Avenue home.
Discount Drug Mart is still planning to tear down the former Ganley auto dealership to make way for a new 24,000-square-feet store on Detroit Avenue. However, company officials have scrapped plans to demolish the home south of the dealership. In a letter to residents of Grace and Cohassett avenues, Dru Siley, the city’s director of planning and development, said the administration wouldn’t have supported the purchase and demolition of the house at 1425 Grace Avenue. “The developer withdrew that item from the proposal and is revising the project plans,” Siley said. However, plans to demolish the multi-unit apartment building are still in the proposal. The city’s planning commission is set to vote on that issue — along with a request to …

About 50 residents attended a community forum to learn more about the new developments on Detroit Avenue.
What about an increase in traffic? What about the project’s proximity to Garfield Middle School? What happens if Discount Drug Mart is a bad neighbor? Those were among the questions from residents attending a forum on Wednesday to discuss the plans for a new Discount Drug Mart at the site of the former Ganley auto dealership on Detroit Avenue. Hosted by the city, a crowd of about 50 people attended the community forum. The company — with its multi-million-dollar renovation already under way at Lakewood Plaza — has plans to move its eastern Lakewood location to the corner of Cohassett and Detroit avenues. Plans call for a red brick structure, 92 parking spaces, a drive-thru, and green space that includes space for a bio-retention swale. …

Value World eyed as tenant to take over the pharmacy’s space at 11900 Detroit Avenue.
Discount Drug Mart is looking to expand its presence in the city. The company — with its multi-million-dollar renovation already under way at Lakewood Plaza — has plans to move its eastern Lakewood location to the abandoned Ganley auto dealership at the corner of Cohassett and Detroit avenues. Value World, a thrift store at W. 107th Street and Lorain Avenue in Cleveland, is considering a move into Drug Mart’s vacated location, according to officials. The former auto dealership's showroom building would be demolished — along with an apartment building and vacant house at the rear of the property — to make way for a 24,000-square-foot Drug Mart, according to plans submitted to the city on Tuesday. Plans call for a red brick structure, 92 …
